Hurray – At Last – Paint on the Road

After many, many months, goodness knows how many times raised at Whittlesey Town Council and direct with County Councillor David Connor the state of our (3) Zebra Crossings in town have today at long last been given a lick of paint –
Thank You.
My perseverance has at last paid off.
The Zebra’s were in such a poor state that I quoted – they were not fit for purpose and have serious doubts of them being compliant.
So we can all cross the road at these Zebra’s in confidence that motorists can see them.

A small success….Thanks Cllr Connor….

Weekend Review

Lets again congratulate The Whittlesey Extravaganza Committee and all the support group, who made a fantastic event for all families at yesterdays event – if only ‘some’ knew the amount of work and preparation required to stage these events – Thanks and well done.
Now for something a little more serious – Boy did I get some feedback about my Metro Mayor article (Mayor James Palmer) – I was very surprised that all the feedback I received supported my arguments and statements, along with yet more publicity (negative) from the Peterborough Telegraph – I and many wonder why someone from Government hasn’t asked Mayor Palmer to justify the Authorities Spending and Expenses!!!!

Locally – The Conservative Group have now chosen their running candidates for next years (May) local elections (Whittlesey/Coastes/Eastrea/Ponderbridge) and yes I have been aware of ‘who’ the would be candidates are for some time – does it make any difference – no is the answer – However as I did happen to meet one councillor & candidate yesterday who reads my web-blog – who has changed his mind I believe on 4 occasions on whether he will stand or not – There is an old saying – If you are not certain about something – then don’t do it.

Some of the Whittlesey wards are not fully covered by the Conservative Group at present – that’s not to say that they will not find candidates before the May elections.
The Labour Group are in even more dire states, in that they will also not be able to find candidates for all Whittlesey wards.
Lib/Dems – Ex Cllr Dave Chapman says he is not standing but he is also known to change his mind just before an election – maybe a couple of others.
The Green Party has a Fenland Group and have made considerable standings previously in Whittlesey and more recently some success in Peterborough and should not be under estimated – Nationally Caroline Lucas comes over very well on TV debates and holds her own against some big guns.
Still there is Tuesday’s Brexit Vote – which could change everything on the political landscape – Nationally and maybe locally – A big unknown….
Will the conservative dissenters – capitulate at the last moment to save the day – who knows – we will all wait and see.
At this moment the vote on Tuesday is still planned to go ahead.

So next weeks episode will name those Whittlesey Councillors who are either retiring, leaving on health grounds or simply fed up with local politics and wish to move on –
watch this space….
This Wednesday evening 7:30pm is Whittlesey Town Council meeting – I wonder ‘if’ any of the ‘new’ candidates the conservatives have chosen will bother to even see what happens at a Whittlesey Town Council meeting – as so far none of the ‘New’ candidates have done so – just shows how much interest they have in ‘their’ electorate?

Thank You ——– E x t r a v a g a n z a

An annual event that ‘nearly’ came to an end 2 years ago, step in Lynne Palmer who took on the role of chairing the small organising committee – from a lot of people who said they would help to just a few who actually did….including myself in a small way. This year’s event is supported by many other Town Organisations and planning takes well over 6 months – There is a lot of Red Tape to conform with.
Lynne P & Richard Ex

This years event on a Saturday from 3pm with the weather being very changeable.
A good turn out with lots of children – a lot of events and a Punch & Judy show….
Unfortunately there was a couple of short sharp showers which dampened the spirit of things but from what I saw everyone was having a good time.
Thanks again to Lynne and her dedicated small group of helpers…..

NHW Tips on Christmas Shopping

Here are some tips for keeping safer when you are out doing the big Chrstmas shopping expedition – visit for a host of more information (From Robin Sutton)
https://www.whittleseynhw.org.uk/

snowflake Stay alert and be aware of what’s going on around you, especially in busy shops and crowded streets where thieves and pickpockets may well be operating.
snowflake Keep valuables in the inside pockets of clothing or bags.
snowflake Only carry the cash and cards that you need. Always shield the PIN pad when entering your PIN.
snowflake Park in an open, well-lit area. Visit www.parkmark.co.uk to find accredited car parks.
snowflake Avoid going back to your car to leave your shopping part-way through your trip. If you have to keep presents in the car, make sure they are out of view in the boot, the car is locked, and keep the receipts with you.
snowflake Never leave your bag unattended on your trolley whilst shopping and don’t leave it in your vehicle when returning your trolley.
snowflake Deter pickpockets and muggers. Don’t overburden yourself with bags/packages. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Always carry a purse close to your body and not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front trouser pocket, likewise with your phone and keys.
snowflake Try and avoid taking young children into busy shopping areas. If it is unavoidable make sure they know what to do if they lose you e.g. tell the nearest counter assistant that they are lost and never leave a shop without you. Agree a meeting point with older children, in case you get separated.
snowflake Keep car doors locked whilst driving in built-up areas, especially if you’ve got bags or presents in the car.

‘We’ had a very good engagement with Cyber Policing

Not many people at the Library today where we held a Cyber and Scam awareness session along with Nigel Sutton Special Crime Team @ Cambs Police and Charlotte Homent Community Protection Manager @ Cambs CC.
We managed to give away a number of Booklets ‘The Little Book of Big Scams’
I had a very long talk with Nigel about Cyber issues and Scams and how the Police and Government are trying to address the issues.
His statistics are frightening – we know the here locally people are duped and scammed every day and that’s the ones we know about there are plenty who are too ashamed to come forward.

Of course ‘everyone’ knows the basics of Cyber/Internet protection – or do they – the criminals are getting better all the time.
So even though we didn’t have a great number join us today – I and those who attended thought it was very useful and we may do another one next year (Summer).
In the meantime if you would like more information the Whittlesey NHW Website is a mine of useful information – visit:-

Do You Know the Law – Ref CCTV

News that Social Media Whittlesey have formed a Whittlesey CCTV Watch.

(Not to be confused and NOT associated with Neighbourhood Watch).

I am supportive of anything which can and will deter criminal activity, but there are rules and regulations around the use and installation of CCTV.

Most ‘sellers’ do not inform their customers of the rules as in some cases a license is required from the ICO
(Information Commissioners Office)

From 25 May 2018, people who use CCTV for domestic purposes, ie to monitor their property, even if it films beyond the boundaries of their property will be exempt from paying a fee under data protection law.

To see whether you are required to register and obtain a license go to the ICO website:-

https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/data-protection-fee/self-assessment/

I have CCTV at my home, professionally installed and have done the self assessment through the link above, and as in the majority of domestic CCTV I am NOT required to register or pay a fee for my CCTV system.

Allaying Fears of Crime in our Area

I am addressing the concerns and issues that have yet again reared up on social media – Here in Whittlesey, in respect of crime, fear of crime and the reporting of crime.
As I have posted on many occasions – Crime in our area is low to medium in comparison to other nearby areas – We are not crime free and this is constantly pointed out to our Police.
I/we & Whittlesey Town Council receive a comprehensive report every month from our Neighbourhood – Sergeant Lugg with what his team have been prioritising and focusing on, they are involved in many other aspects of Law & Order besides what is in the report.
Want to know what is in it – then join up with NHW by going to OurWatch Website and registering – simple 5 minutes. https://www.ourwatch.org.uk/

Next there has been chatter about forming Street Patrols – well those who would like to do so please be aware and informed :- Want to know more – ;-;-;-    Ask Me…..

In Wisbech some 2 years ago local (Wisbech) Councillor Steve Tierney took it upon himself to organise and form a sort of ‘Street Warden Group’
At the outset he did not consult with the Police, and he financed ‘Yellow Reflective Jackets’ Torches etc….

This ‘group’ would the patrol around Wisbech town centre and help/give advice/directions etc to anyone who approached them – all sounds good.
Within a very short time – one Saturday evening the small group of ‘Street Wardens’ were accosted by some drunken louts in the town centre, they called for the Police as they felt threatened, unfortunately the Police could not respond as they had other higher demands at that time. Shortly afterwards the Street Warden Group disbanded.
There is another major issue – ‘Insurance’  – The Street Wardens’ had NO Public Liability Insurance and NO Personal Accident Insurance, so if they or anyone connected with them had an ‘accident’ or was involved in a physical aspect – then they were NOT covered.

An example of how things work being, when-ever events take place in Whittlesey -say
The Straw Bear Festival – the organisers + Stallholders all have to have Public Liability Insurance or they are not allowed to attend – that means everyone.

Neighbourhood Watch is a Nationally recognised group, fully constituted and ‘Fully Insured’ to carry out their work, and fully supported by ALL Police Authorities and Police & Crime Commissioners throughout the UK.

Whipping up emotions on Social Media seems to be the norm these days – but please I don’t like crime either – but we have to work with our Law Enforcement Agencies and not encourage vigilante groups.

JOIN THE UK’S LARGEST VOLUNTARY MOVEMENT      https://www.ourwatch.org.uk/

The next meeting of Whittlesey Neighbourhood Watch will be on:-
Thursday 13th November at 7:00pm at Grosvenor House
(Whittlesey Town Council Offices) – side door up the stairs – you are welcome to come along.
Our local Neighbourhood PCSO plans to attend.

Crime Concerns – Please Report It To The Police

It has come to me…!!! that yesterday there were 2 shifting looking individuals asking people various questions, some mainly females felt intimidated by these people.
It popped up on Social Media pretty quickly but nothing was reported to the Police.

I can not emphasis enough – yes by all means let people know on Social Media – BUT please inform the Police – if it is not reported, it is NOT recorded – If there are NO RECORDs of such incidents then the Police are not only unaware – they can not act on the intelligence given by the public.

If you are accosted, feel threatened in any way or intimidated by anyone male or female – I would suggest you call 999 and report it instantly.
Remember No Report    =    No Record    =    No Response
