Oh Dear It’s Happened Again & Again

Yes It Happens Every Day – Scammed/Spammed/Hacked       My Post on the 01st June

Obviously at least 4 people in Whittlesey that I have been made aware of have not or do not read my web-blog, had they have done so, they WOULD NOT have ‘clicked’ on the Hacked link contained in the bogus e-mail.
Now there is potential for the 4 people’s e-mail address lists to also be ‘Hacked’ – plus potentially a number of other I am not aware of or been told about.

I thought these ‘simple’ scam messages were well known about – but that can not be the case.
DO NOT ‘click’ or open attachments where you are unsure of the source of the e-mail.
Winning the Lottery when you have NOT bought a ticket is pretty basic – but believe it people do so….
Play safe on line – there is plenty of information on the net.

If you want a copy of this booklet, they are available (free) at Whittlesey Library.
If you can not get to the Library – I can supply and deliver (free – locally)

Yes It Happens Every Day – Scammed/Spammed/Hacked

Yesterday Fred M had his email account hacked – for those who don’t know how this works, here is a brief summary.
Everyone in Fred’s address book gets an e-mail supposedly from him, normally some sob story about wanting some help/or money.
There is clearly some obvious tellers

I know that Fred’s e-mail is @sky.com – clicking on the link will take the unsuspected to the ‘Hackers account’ the grammar is another obvious give away – so many errors.

(Removed link) – in this case @yahoo.com

I need to get an amazon gift card for my Niece, Its her birthday but i can’t do this now because I’m currently traveling. Can you get it from any store around you? I’ll pay back as soon as i am back. Kindly let me know if you can handle this.”

There are lots of websites that can help you remain safe online – one is below – the link is safe and will take you to – ‘getsafeonline’

https://www.getsafeonline.org/protecting-your-computer/spam-and-scam-email/

So what happens next, well there are several options:-

Fred’s e-mail provider can put a ‘stop’ on his account (which they have done) and if he has no back-up account (Gmail for example) he is out of action for some time.

  • Change Your Password. …
  • Let Your email Contacts Know. …
  • Change Your Security Question. …
  • Commit to Multi Factor Authentication. …
  • Check Your Email Settings. …
  • Scan Your Computer for Malware and Viruses. …
  • Change Any Other Accounts with the Same Password. …

Consider Creating a New Email Address.

Always use strong passwords
Make sure you have a good rated Anti-Virus/Malware program running

Finally Neighbourhood Watch has just run an Scam Awareness session – Fred M was NOT one of the attendee’s even though he was aware of the session, maybe, just maybe had he have attended this session – what has happened may not have occurred.
We have run these sessions before and if there is interest will do so again in the future.

If I can help – please contact me – my details are on the Top Section.

I have just received confirmation from Groundworks that we have been successful in our bid for £4000 of funding from the Tesco’s plastic bag fund for the purchase of Memorial Benches.
May I thank all who have supported our application by placing their blue disks in our slot.

Waiting For News on The Kings Dyke Crossing…..

Further to my dozens of updates/posts over the last 6 years (that’s 6 years) we sit and wait for news on whether the 2nd part of the contract to actually build the Bridge/Roads around Kings Dyke Crossing is anywhere near being completed?

Below is an indicative plan of the proposed development, along with a development plan for a smallish business park on land adjacent to the ByPass which was presented to Whittlesey Town Council – and reported on by me at the time.

Businesses Beware

The following is not cyber crime related but it is an example of how criminals continue to find ways to exploit technology for their benefit.
If you work in an environment which uses a bank card reader it will be relevant, please share and be alert to anyone trying to distract you at the point of sale.

Persons aged between 18 and 30 yrs old are travelling around Cambridgeshire and the region entering shops, hotels etc. and purchasing low value items. They will pay by credit card and on inserting the credit card others will distract staff whilst the person inserting the card into the reader will scroll down to the refund section of the card reader and place several thousand pounds onto the card as a refund.

The cards are either applied for by the offenders or they will use the bank card of a third party, possibly for a cash incentive or maybe fear and intimidation.

Social Media Trolls at it Again

I just don’t get it….how many times must I/we inform the public that Whittlesey Town Councillors DO NOT get ANY allowances or expenses under normal circumstances.

The elected Mayor gets an allowance to cover the costs of attending civic functions.
For most of the rest of us – it actually costs most us money to be a Town Councillor.
We all do it because we want too and not for any other reasons.
I say again just in case the misinformed can not comprehend.
I speak for myself:
I have never been offered any bribe, inducement, brown envelope or a holiday in the Caribbean – Ever – I can not comment on anyone else, but I would be very surprised if any other Whittlesey Town Councillor was offered anything.
I hope this spells it out once again in plain English….so please stop it.

Parking Debate – Again

So I hear that the ‘Parking Issues’ have kicked off again on social media.
Unfortunately the comments are missing the point of getting others peoples idea’s and comments, but what we have is the ‘usual’ ‘Trolling’ of individuals and in some cases Councillors.

As I’ve commented on many times, peoples memories are very short, at the May Elections, Literature from some Whittlesey Candidates (who are now elected) made several bold statements (promises) about Parking in our town.

I want debate, I want peoples views, I want peoples idea’s on how to reasonably tackle the issues and concerns around parking in our town – I am not interested in the ‘Trolls’ with no understanding of how parking is enforced here in Fenland.

Below is the article I placed on this Web-Blog for The Whittlesey Business Forum in Novemeber 2018 – The WBF discussed this at their January meeting and made no commitment as to how it might effect their businesses.

Look at some of the alternatives in my article – give me/us some more idea’s –
The Parking problems/issues are not going away and will only get worse.

Simples – Don’t Park Illegally – and you won’t get a ticket.
