More Cyber and Ransomware News

From Rebecca Tinsley
Cyber Security Advisor
Central Intelligence Bureau Cambridgeshire Constabulary

Seeing as Ransomware has dominated the news in the last week I have attached a separate advisory which I would ask you to circulate among your networks. For those who are unsure what ransomware, viruses, worms and Trojans are the Get Safe Online website has some basic definitions and for those who want further advice on how to protect yourselves these can be found on the websites for the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), Eastern Region Serious and Organised Crime Unit (ERSOU) or Microsoft. An Action Fraud alert was sent earlier this week on ecops.
Both documents can be circulated within your communities.

Cyber Attack Update

Visit Whittlesey NHW Website for lots of help and information –

https://www.whittleseynhw.org.uk/

Whittlesey Computer shops have been busy with plenty of enquiries – other than the ‘usual’ Malware/Virus issues there has been no major issues locally.
Many people now realise that keeping their computers updated can and will stop many issues.
Please invest in Anti-Virus software as a minimum investment….

Please take note, Viruses, Malware and all other Nasties are here forever – do not take anything for granted.
Your Bank will never phone/call/e-mail you asking for passwords or to move money.

NHS England Cyber attack press release – all local Health Authorities.
Please see below the latest agreed national messaging regarding the cyber attack.

  • The NHS has continued to treat patients throughout the weekend.
  • We have been working with the organisations providing urgent and emergency care who have been infected to varying degrees.
  • Most have found ways of working around this but seven, including St Barts in London, have asked for extra support.

Core messages for patients attending hospitals and primary care especially GP surgeries

  • If you have a hospital appointment you should still attend unless you are contacted and told not to.
  • NHS England has been offering advice and assistance to GP surgeries.

GP surgeries will be open as usual tomorrow (Monday)
If you have an appointment you should still attend unless contacted by your surgery and told not to.

  • People should continue to use the NHS wisely.  Remember patients can seek help and advice from a range of other sources, such as pharmacies.
  • Bearing in mind the impact of the global cyber attack we would urge people to be patient with staff who may still be dealing with disruption on Monday morning.

Communications handling advice

Please use these messages to proactively communicate with the media, the public and staff. This is the latest public messaging which is being communicated by NHS England and we would encourage you to use this, however, if you need to describe local issues and circumstances please adapt as necessary.
In tailoring your local communications please focus on the channels that will be most appropriate to the people you are trying to reach. You may wish to appeal to your local media, provide information on websites and use social media channels.
Please put people forward for media interviews as you see fit.

Take care not to provide messages that may impact negatively or destabilise neighbouring practices or other services such as A&E.

Could you also please arrange for these messages to be shared with GPs and other primary care staff in your CCG area.
As a number of CCGs do not have communications on call arrangements, we have issued this message to CCGs managers on call to action, but have also copied in communications leads.

Deputy Head of Communications and Engagement – Midlands and East
NHS England (East)

Cyber Attack (Part 2)

Just some of – Mission Control at my home.

Only a couple of weeks ago, a good friend, who should know better – needed to spend well over £100 to get his laptop cleaned out of ‘rubbish’ – because he relied on Window security only – not good enough. Another friend lost control of his laptop and could not access his ‘passwords’ – this one I dealt with and was successful in ‘hacking’ and resetting his initial and subsequent passwords – he was very happy to be able to use his laptop again, but I demonstrated how relatively easy it was to do (with knowledge).

As I/we at NHW have been promoting for some time now – Cyber type crime is at our doorstep – unless you are totally ‘Off the Grid’ which not many are – you are vulnerable.

As in the previous post there are some very simple ways of protecting yourself from 98% of being ‘Hacked’ –
We are all complacent/guilty as far as passwords are concerned – so many needed most people use the same passwords where-ever they go – but by just making passwords a bit stronger – reduces the chances of being ‘Hacked’ – why not use symbols like #@£+ before and after you normal password helps a great deal.
One of the weakest links which not many (around 2%) people address is their router – they leave the system with its default settings – which again to the ‘Snooper/Hacker’ is easy prey.
Many of us use Internet Banking – I have done so for well over 15 years – always make sure you are connected to your bank and not the ‘Hacker’ always look for https://
which is a secure website you should always get a small lock sign on the toolbar.
There are other ways to check to see if you are using a legitimate website.

I could go on for hours, but not here to conduct courses – take ‘Action Fraud’ advice and hopefully I/you/we will not get hit – we are just reducing the risk –

Lots of different companies that address Virus/Malware/Randomware – just need to invest a few £££ every year – yes there is some free ones – I would rather pay a premium and get the latest versions that try and keep up with the ‘Hackers’

Cyber Attack (Part 1)

I have and will continue to try and educate and update the community in regards to Cyber Crime, I am a ‘Cyber Ambassador’ on behalf of Cambs Police and have attended seminars on the subject, along with my professional electronics qualifications and career of 40 years.

Below is the latest received  from ‘Action Fraud’ the governments gateway.

Following the ransomware cyber attack on Friday 12 May which affected the NHS and is believed to have affected other organisations globally, the City of London Police’s National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has issued an alert urging both individuals and businesses to follow protection advice immediately and in the coming days. Ransomware is a form of malicious software (Malware) that enables cyber criminals to remotely lock down files on your computer or mobile device. Criminals will use ransomware to extort money from you (a ransom), before they restore access to your files. There are many ways that ransomware can infect your device, whether it be a link to a malicious website in an unsolicited email, or through a security vulnerability in a piece of software you use.
Key Protect messages for businesses to protect themselves from ransomware:

  • Install system and application updates on all devices as soon as they become available.
  • Install anti-virus software on all devices and keep it updated.
  • Create regular backups of your important files to a device that isn’t left connected to your network as any malware infection could spread to that too.

The National Cyber Security Centre’s technical guidance includes specific software patches to use that will prevent uninfected computers on your network from becoming infected with the “WannaCry” Ransomware: https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/ransomware-latest-ncsc-guidance   For additional in-depth technical guidance on how to protect your organisation from ransomware, details can be found here: https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/guidance/protecting-your-organisation-ransomware

Key Protect advice for individuals:

  • Install system and application updates on all devices as soon as they become available.
  • Install anti-virus software on all devices and keep it updated.
  • Create regular backups of your important files to a device (such as an external hard drive or memory stick) that isn’t left connected to your computer as any malware infection could spread to that too.
  • Only install apps from official app stores, such as Google’s Play Store, or Apple’s App Store as they offer better levels of protection than some 3rd party  stores. Jail breaking, rooting, or disabling any of the default security features of your device will make it more susceptible to malware infections.

Phishing/smishing Fraudsters may exploit this high profile incident and use it as part of phishing/smishing campaigns. We urge people to be cautious if they receive any unsolicited communications from the NHS. The protect advice for that is the following:

  • An email address can be spoofed. Don’t open attachments or click on the links within any unsolicited emails you receive, and never respond to emails that ask for your personal or financial details.
  • The sender’s name and number in a text message can be spoofed, so even if the message appears to be from an organisation you know of, you should still exercise caution, particularly if the texts are asking you to click on a link or call a number.

Don’t disclose your personal or financial details during a cold call, and remember that the police and banks will never ring you and ask you to verify your PIN, withdraw your cash, or transfer your money to another “safe” account.

If you have been a victim of fraud or cyber crime, please report it to Action Fraud at http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/

Feeling a bit Rough….

Yesterdays operation sort of went Okay – just that the anaesthetic took for ever to kick in and has taken for ever to wear off.
Thanks for the phone calls and visits….

I won’t show the before picture – far to gruesome ….
If you have good feet/legs, best look after them, you don’t realise how much you rely on these digits?
This was another problem on the other leg 5 years ago, I was in a Plaster Caste  for 5 months….
