Latest Crime In/Around Whittlesey

Burglary update – Quinion Close Yesterday morning, Victim has left front and rear doors to their property open due to the warm weather and has noticed wallet has been stolen from inside the house. No further info at this stage.

Sometime during Monday 25th June, North Green Coates. An address has allegedly been
broken into – nothing stolen. However reports suggest a room has been turned over.

We all know when it is hot we tend to leave doors and windows open – just make sure you are in to room if you do this and the close when you leave.

I am pleased to report that the members of Whittlesey Neighbourhood Watch have received a very comprehensive report for Neighbourhood Policing in/around Fenland.
This gives us an insight to how the Police are prioritising their work.
The report is for the membership only and trusted partnerships (Councils).

If you would like to receive these reports and e-cops messages why not join the UK’s largest voluntary organisation…..

News from New Queen Street Surgery

If you are a patient registered with the practice, the following will take place..
New appointments system through the summer months – from 9th July we are not taking ANY pre-bookings for doctors (nurses stay the same as now) this is to ensure we can deal with the day’s demand on the day – so instead of pre-booking patients will be asked to phone the day they wish to be seen/helped.  Then they will be put on the list for a doctors telephone consultation – then if the doctor feels they need to see/examine the patient they will bring them up later that same day in a face to face appointment.  The research shows that approximately 70% of the doctors’ workload can be dealt with over the phone – this system will give us extra capacity to deal with more patients each day with the same number or staff.  We are going to be advertising on the web site and in the surgery.

Beware – The Illegal Parker

I am pleased to report that 4 parking tickets were issued in Whittlesey last week and a further one yesterday – those 5 ‘illegal parkers’ are not going to be very happy –
There is a fine line between, inconsiderate parking and illegal parking and our enforcement officers know the difference – they will not just ticket a vehicle immediately – they will normally give time for the owner to return and in most cases give a warning or ‘words of advice’ – so beware tickets are coming to those who can not or will not obey the highway code.

Some we are Winning – Some we are Not

As you maybe aware I have been campaigning for many years on the recycling of Plastics, Bottles, Cans and Polystyrene produces, many others and the national press especially Sky TV/News have driven this campaign, that at least in our country there seems to be an appetite to engage with producers and end users to the extent ‘we’ now see some progress – at last.
However the scourge of the ‘Fly-Tipper’ never seems far away, and again this week, ‘Funthams Lane’ – behind McCains™ has been subjected to more fly-tipping, on this occasion ‘they’ have gone out of their way to semi-hide their black plastic bags.
If you see any fly-tipping Fenland District Council are very good at getting it cleared
(at the rate payers expense).
You can report on-line by going to FDC’s Website, environmentalservicerequests@fenland.gov.uk
You can report it to our Town Council, whittleseytowncouncil@btconnect.com
or by telephoning FDC 01354 654321

Trends Last Week

The main contacts have been about ‘Planning’ in/around Whittlesey – last week saw the ‘Old Nursery’ site on Eastrea Road being granted planning permission.
This site has been earmarked for many years and has had previous outline permissions in the past, the developer never went through with the build, this maybe called ‘Land Banking’ which many builders and developers do – waiting for prices to rise.
Lets hope – this latest planning permission comes to actually building houses.
That said here is another 100+ development, more people, more children, more traffic and from what I can see – little consideration to the ‘magic word’ ‘Infrastructure’ – another development at the ‘Old Nursery’ site on Peterborough Road, is equally as concerning – note I am NOT saying controversial – which it is not – concern is the term I am using.
As I have posted before Whittlesey has well over 1,200 houses already earmarked for future development – and more could possibly come on top of that.
There is of course – The Whittlesey Neighbourhood Plan’ which is moving steadily forwards. Those who went to the consultation meetings are perhaps aware of what the aims are – more ‘say’ for how and where building takes place is one of the main objectives.
If you have ‘concerns’ why not raise them with your elected councillor, why not attend a planning meeting, why not take part in the Neighbourhood Plan – these are all avenues for the public to have their say….Your Call…..

Crime Update 20-06-18

There is concern that victims of previous Computer Software Service Fraud (CSSF) are being re-targeted for “owed money”. The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) reports that CSSF scammers are returning to contact previous victims, requesting that they pay money owed for a fake malware protection service they had provided. Alternatively, the fraudster will ask for a new subscription fee in return for protection from a new threat. The victims that have made payments to the fraudsters have done so via credit/debit card payments. In some instances threatening and aggressive language has been used against victims, as part of the attempt to coerce them into sending money.

Computer Software Service Fraud involves the victim being contacted, told that there is a problem with their computer, and that for a fee this issue can be resolved. The aim of the fraudster at this point is usually to gain remote access to the victim’s computer and, subsequently, access to their online banking account. No fix actually occurs. The victims will often be cold-called or will receive a pop-up on their computer, prompting them to phone the suspect.

Since the beginning of this year (2018), the total loss for repeat victims of CSSF has been reported as £16,712.85. The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has noticed an increase in such reports since the beginning of May.

Protect Yourself
• If you receive such an unsolicited call or pop-up, do not make a payment. Always ensure you know who you are talking to. If in doubt, hang up immediately.

• Do not allow remote access to your computer.

Don’t be rushed or pressured into making a decision.
Under no circumstances would a genuine bank, or another trusted organisation, force you to make a financial transaction on the spot; they would never ask you to transfer money into another account for fraud reasons. Remember to stop and take time to carefully consider your actions.

Listen to your instincts. If something feels wrong then it is usually right to question it.  Criminals may lull you into a false sense of security when you are out and about or rely on your defences being down when you’re in the comfort of your own home. They may appear trustworthy, but they may not be who they claim to be.

Think You Know About Scamming – Think Again !!!

Every day ‘someone’ in our area becomes a victim of ‘scammers’ – I am not talking about those who are sometimes ‘savvy’ enough to reject these ‘criminals’ – these are our neighbours and friends.

Karen Reid a Community Protection Officer from Cambridgeshire County Council to deliver a Scams Awareness session at Whittlesey Library. It is ‘free’ to attend.
                                           Tuesday 10th July from 10.30 to 11.45am.

In order the organiser has an idea of the numbers who may attend it would be helpful if you could e-mail Jakki.Racey@cambridgeshire.gov.uk your details.

Courier Fraud News – Update

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has identified an increasing number of reports submitted to Action Fraud from the public concerning courier fraud.
Fraudsters are contacting victims by telephone and purporting to be a police officer or bank official. To substantiate this claim, the caller might be able to confirm some easily obtainable basic details about the victim such as their full name and address. They may also offer a telephone number for the victim to call to check that they are genuine; this number is not genuine and simply redirects to the fraudster who pretends to be a different person. After some trust has been established, the fraudster will then, for example, suggest;- Some money has been removed from a victim’s bank account and staff at their local bank branch are responsible.
– Suspects have already been arrested but the “police” need money for evidence.
– A business such as a jewellers or currency exchange is operating fraudulently and they require assistance to help secure evidence.

Victims are then asked to cooperate in an investigation by attending their bank and withdrawing money, withdrawing foreign currency from an exchange or purchasing an expensive item to hand over to a courier for examination who will also be a fraudster. Again, to reassure the victim, a safe word might be communicated to the victim so the courier appears genuine.
At the time of handover, unsuspecting victims are promised the money they’ve handed over or spent will be reimbursed but in reality there is no further contact and the money is never seen again.

Protect Yourself

Your bank or the police will never:

– Phone and ask you for your PIN or full banking password.

– Ask you to withdraw money to hand over to them for safe-keeping, or send someone to your home to collect cash, PIN, cards or cheque books if you are a victim of fraud.
Don’t assume an email or phone call is authentic
Just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name and address or even your mother’s maiden name), it doesn’t mean they are genuine. Be mindful of who you trust – criminals may try and trick you into their confidence by telling you that you’ve been a victim of fraud
Stay in control
If something feels wrong then it is usually right to question it. Have the confidence to refuse unusual requests for personal or financial information.

Excellent NHW Meeting – Last Night

A good meeting bringing the group attending up to date with all the latest we have received.
I have been asked by the Neighbourhood Sergeant that his report not be published as it sometimes leads to ‘Fake News/Misinformation on other social media sites’ – so all I can say is if you wish to hear or see the Police report – then why not attend the NHW meeting.
Our main concern back to Sgt Lugg was the on-going issues around Whittlesey High Causeway – I did inform him of the most recent incident which was reported here last week.
Our Whittlesey NHW Website has a vast amount of information and tips on keeping safe and is kept well up-to-date….click on the link below….
