RIP Vi Ellington

Being a ‘Coates’ boy – I had the priveldge to have lived opposite Vi from 1953 to 1962, she was a ‘lovely lady’. As a ‘very’ young boy she looked after me when my mother had to be elsewhere. Some 66 years later we would often ‘bump’ into one another in Whittlesey, and she always greeted me and everyone with a warm smile and asked how you were.
Violet Ellington you will be sadly missed by many – RIP

Peterborough Parish Conference

Today Myself and Cllr Eamonn Dorling attended The Peterborough Parish Conference, hosted by Peterborough City Council for the 40 Parishes around Peterborough and we were invited to join in.
The theme was ‘Planning for the Future’
I arrived nice and early, despite taking me 10 minutes to get out of Ramsey Road/Church Street – I managed to meet Leader of PCC Cllr John Hodich who let me ‘bend his ear’ on the state we are living with on the A605 at present and of course The Kings Dyke Crossing, although very sympathetic – Peterborough has enough of it’s own issues & problems….

Fantastic venue at The Future Business Centre – |London Road | Posh Ground |

Be Aware More & More Scams

I have just been made aware of the following telephone call that was received by a Cambridgeshire resident only minutes ago. Although this type of call is nothing new, it is clearly continuing to impact on our local communities.
‘My wife just had a scam phone call on our landline stating that there was a warrant out for her arrest. This upset her considerably. She was advised to press 1 to speak to an officer or 2 to learn about the file. She did neither and hung up. The number given by 1471 was 07377289633
I have tried to call the mobile number but the line disconnects. Just to confirm, do not push the button on the keypad and hang up just like the person did above. Neither the police or any law enforcement would contact people in such a way and I trust you will all know that, but there will be people out there that you can help warn so please pass on and help prevent fraud.

Any questions or concerns please let me know.

Conned…Out of Life Savings

Please read the following BBC© news article, makes for sad reading but let us alert others through our works so they do not fall victim.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-your-money-50249529

“I felt devastated, absolutely devastated and so guilty. My life collapsed really”.
Cynthia Tuck remembers the moment she realised she had been conned out of her life savings, and those of her late husband, George.

She’d become one of dozens of victims of a sophisticated, organised scam offering hugely over-valued coloured diamonds as “investments”.

But realising she’d been conned wasn’t the end of Cynthia’s misery. A three-year fight for justice – involving five different police forces and multiple investigations – would ultimately lead nowhere.Cynthia and her family have been feeling nothing but anger, resentment and frustration towards the justice system because the people who were involved in the scam got off scot-free.

No charges. No trial. No justice.

Many thanks

Charity Ball – In Memory of Hannah Overton

On Saturday evening Connie and I were privileged to be part of a fantastic organised fund raising event in memory of Hannah Overton, who passed away last December. Nearly 400 attended the ‘Black Tie’ Opal Charity Ball held at Springfields Conference Centre Spalding. The event was organised by her close friend Sarah Leuty and husband Calvin.

Whittlesey Lion’s – sponsored 4 tables.

It is hoped this event will raise in the region of £10,000 in support of: – Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, Bloodwise & Leicester Hospitals Charities Haematology Ward.

Dinner, Silent Auction, Live Auction and Music were very much enjoyed by all.

Hannah was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in July of 2018. She lost the brave battle aged just 28. She was a prolific ‘Bowler’ and had been interim assistant head teacher at St Botoloph’s Church of England Primary School. Hannah was born and schooled in Whittlesey and attended Lincoln University.

Other fundraising by friends, colleagues and fellow bowlers for these 3 charities and also Cancer Research in memory of Hannah has already exceeded £20,000.

Designated Driver Scheme

Residents are being urged to encourage their local pubs to sign up to a scheme supporting the force’s month-long campaign targeting drink drivers this December.

The ‘I’m DES’ scheme sees participating venues give free soft drinks to designated drivers.

The initiative, led by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership (CPRSP), aims to reduce the number of road traffic collisions caused by drink driving over the festive period.

Many licensed premises across Cambridgeshire successfully took part in the scheme over the summer and also during last year’s festive session.

Officers are keen to hear from venues across the county who wish to take part and are keen to get as many pubs and venues signed up as possible.

Venues participating in the I’m DES scheme are highlighted by the force and will receive posters to promote the scheme and wristbands to give away to people visiting the venues and acting as designated drivers.

Any pubs or venues interested in taking part in the scheme are asked to email LicensingSouth@cambs.pnn.police.uk with the below details:

  • Your name
  • Name of your premises
  • full address
  • the quantity of posters and wrists bands that you would like

Anyone interested in asked to email these details by this Friday (15 November) at the latest.

Thank you,
Corporate Communications
