Was it Christmas/New Year and My Birthday – I think NOT

Blow me down with a feather – I am sooo haaappy – yesterday, we had not one but two Anglian Water Vans on our small estate, 3+ hours carrying out maintenance, flushing all the sewage drains out and re-seating the manhole covers. I did offer them a cup of tea, but they had their own – Thanks Guys.

After they left – the Large road sweeper came along – we don’t see him very often either.
Next a bloke in a Highways marked vehicle turned up – he didn’t get out of his car to see the ever increasing and getting bitter potholes – but what the heck he came a looked at something.

Finally the grass cutting contractors came and did their bit (after the road sweeper) and made a fair enough job – after last years very poorly managed events.
So I almost celebrated….but lets not get carried away.

The next major on -going issue is that of Vehicles using High Causeway (again and again).
More (again) as information is received.

Tonight is a Whittlesey Business Forum meeting.

Volunteer – Whittlesey Library – Help

Hi all,
We are looking at recruiting a new Volunteer at Whittlesey possibly on a Monday afternoon, but the day is negotiable. This role will ideally be to assist members of the public with completing their Bus Passes/Renewals and Blue Badges.
If someone is interested in volunteering in the Library, but would rather help with shelving of returned stock and looking for bookings customers have requested from other Libraries then that would also be welcomed as this will free staff time to assist with the Bus Passes etc.

This is where you all come in, If you, or you know of anyone who may be interested in either of these roles then please pass on my details and I am happy to discuss the roles further.
Kind Regards,
Hayley

Please make contact with the Library if you are interested.

Whittlesey Library circa 1984. The Library has been ‘homed’ in several places in the past 50 years.
It had a base in Market Street – then moved to Queen Street, then moved to its present building.

Someone who likes to visit the Betting Shop regularly is causing issues – beware even though the vehicle has a disabled card – they are causing a problem – my correspondent
has reported the vehicle to the Police – Park sensibly.

Trending this Week-end…

I have not one but two election leaflets for Cllr David Connor come through my door – maybe ‘someone’ is trying hard to convince me of ‘something’. The County local elections are coming and I’ll be fair with ALL candidates, incumbent County Councillor David Connor is standing once more and now includes areas of Whittlesey Lattersey and St Marys South Wards. In his election material he states:
Keeping villages as villages – But fails to say what he is doing about it
Traffic speeding through our towns and villages – But fails to say what he is doing about it.
Ensuring the Kings Dyke Crossing is delivered on time and within budget – he attended a WTC meeting last year and ‘promised’ to give regular updates – sorry I haven’t seen any so far.
Before voting may I boldly suggest 2 minutes by ‘Googling’® Councillor David Connor – you may be better informed prior to casting your vote!

Some big improvements coming … the Hero of Aliwal on Church Street is making big progress and major renovations – by Broad Street Veterinary Partners which by the looks of things will be a vast improvement.

The ‘Old Hero’                  The ‘Hero’ circa 1985     The ‘Hero’ today

More good news – With ‘The Railway Inn’ completing a £200+k major renovation and
The Straw Bear pub also back in business.

Excellent NHW Meeting

15 members of Whittlesey Neighbourhood Watch attended our quarterly meeting.
We were pleased to have in attendance PCSO Shane Greene – who is allocated to Whittlesey. Subjects raised were being vigilant under the current police advice. On local issues, Fly-tipping, vehicles using High Causeway, speeding (PCSO has been out with the speed gun on several occasions) and anti-social behaviour were some of the items raised.
Our other main concern is the number of people locally who are being scammed on the internet – we have tried to raise this profile on a number of occasions.
Both myself and NHW Secretary Robin Sutton will be attending Police HQ at the end of the month taking part in a Cyber -Awareness seminar.
We hope then to run short courses/presentation to any community organisation who think they may benefit from our help.

Answer to last weeks Library Quiz….

The angle between the hour hand and minute hand when the clock is at 3:15 is – 7½ degrees….
Several teams did get the correct answer.

Remain Vigilant II – Message from Cambs Policing

Dear Partners,
I write in the absence of Area Commander Dave Murphy, following yesterday’s terrorist attack in London and associated enquiries being made in the Weds Midlands area.
Firstly, I am sure we are all saddened and reflective at this time for those who lost their lives and those who are left behind. There are close links between London and Cambridgeshire in many different ways and a number of our residents will be travelling to the capital this morning for business and other reasons as per their usual routines.

Whilst I appreciate that you will receive many pieces of information from different sources and may be involved in County or wider discussions with Police and others concerning this event, I wanted to offer a brief update from the Fenland senior Management Team as those responsible for the day-to-day policing of the area.

As I am sure you may be aware, the current threat level in the United Kingdom remains “Severe” and this has been unchanged following yesterday’s events. There remains a necessity for sustained vigilance in our communities. However, we seek to perpetuate the national message of maintaining normality as far as able and encouraging communities to report anything they feel is relevant. 101 should be used for calls that are non-urgent and of course 999 for more serious matters where concerns are imminent or severe.
Yesterday we commenced contacting representatives of a wide range of local communities and will continue to do so to deliver a strategy of providing consistent messaging and ensuring exchange of information. This will include engagement with our partners at supervisory and operational level.

Owing to the demographic of Fenland, it is very much a case of business as usual. As you can imagine, key locations and those with a high footfall across the County will see an increase in Police presence. This is not to alarm but merely to increase immediate accessibility of officers to offer words of reassurance and information to those who need it.
The Constabulary is currently running a command structure operating along the lines of Gold (Strategic), Silver (Tactical) and Bronze (Operations) with which you may be familiar. This will meet periodically to ensure that a Force-wide strategy is delivered and the effective governance of activity across the six local authority areas of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough UA.

Should there be any additional information that comes to light, we will of course ensure that it is shared in a timely fashion.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any assistance today.
Kind regards,

Inspector Will Davis
Fenland Operations Manager

Crime Prevention Officer Fenland

Remain Vigilant

After yesterdays incident in Westminster – London, all members of the public are being asked to remain vigilant and to report directly to the police anything they may see as suspicious.
Just because our perception of living in a sleepy little town – we would not be affected or have individuals who might have cause of concern – is not necessary the case.
Our town area covers some 12,000 people and ‘we’ don’t know what some people may be planning.
