Over the last week we have been receiving steady information in from various agencies and I will endeavour to share this with you.  Some items will be more relevant than others, if at any point you wish to be removed please let me know.

Residents seeking support:
FDC have set up a telephone hub that signposts residents towards access to food, medicine and other important services. Anyone needing help in Fenland who isn’t sure who to turn to can call on 01354 654321 or email covid19@fenland.gov.uk The call centre is open between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Advice for Businesses
A number of you have registered with FDC to let us know about your food provision for residents, which we have been sharing with callers as they enquire.  You may find these information pages specifically for businesses also useful:

Kings Dyke Bridge Work To Begin This Year – Maybe!

See Cambs Times© arricle Click Here
The expected break in news is welcomed by most of Whittlesey and other commuters using the A605 – It appears that CCC and Cllr Count are now vindicated in their stance to cancel the previous association with the Kier Group®
Let us all hope once more that the project will go ahead – but there are still many variables that could stop or delay the project – see full article on Cambs Times.

Good To See – Weed Control Out In Force

I did see the ‘man’ yesterday zooming around Whittlesey spraying ‘weed control’ along pathways and roadsides. Thanks again for the workers who carry on regardless….

We Are All In This Together – Questions!

My ‘essential’ journeys are on behalf of our elderly, vulnerable, and many self isolating, along with a very dedicated ‘core’ group of Neighbourhood Watch ‘volunteers.
We DO NOT go out every day.

I just find it far too busy everywhere when I go out – is everyone on essential duties.
The traffic in/around and passing through ‘appears’ near normal at times – or am I imagining it all.

Yesterday my correspondent informs me there were over 150 vehicles waiting for their ‘Click & Collect’ at B&Q (with a police presence) – today at 1pm there were well over a hundred waiting for up to 2 hours – I dare say many are taking advantage of good weather and time off. The B&Q staff directing people into the car park, wore no protective clothing and expected the customer to open their window so they could ‘engage at a short distance’ to inform them of the pending delay….there was 3 builder types on a hoist nearby working away in very close proximity to one another.

As reported last week ‘we’ have a resident who shops twice a day every day because they have always done that and see no reason what-so-ever NOT too do so now.

Support For Residents Living With Domestic Abuse

We know this is a difficult and worrying time for everyone, but particularly those living with domestic abuse. A change in routine and the current advice to stay at home can put added strain on any relationship, but we want to send a clear message that you do not have to suffer in silence and there is never an excuse for abuse.

We want you to know that support remains available during these challenging times and we in the police, alongside a whole host of partners, are here to help.

We appreciate that living in an abusive relationship whilst in lockdown can make you feel as though your voice can’t be heard and picking up the phone to us can be even more difficult than usual. But there are still ways to speak out:

Here’s how you can contact us

  • In an emergency, always dial 999 but if you are in danger and are unable to speak on the phone, call 999 and then press 55. You will be transferred to a call handler who will attempt to ask you simple yes or no questions. If you can’t speak at all, listen carefully to the questions and instructions of the call handler so they can assess and arrange help. More information on this service can be found here.
  • You can speak to us live for advice any time via our online webchat service here.
  • You can report domestic abuse on our website here.
  • If you want to make an online report without being seen, our website has a permanent red ‘quick exit’ button at the top of the page which takes you to a weather forecast website. Information on how to hide or delete your online reporting history can be found here.

Family, friends and neighbours
Many people living with abuse may not feel able to report crime to us and that’s how other members of the community can assist. Please help us protect residents by listening out for suspicious behaviour or noises and reporting any concerns you have about neighbours, friends or family members who may be suffering in silence. We want to be there for the people of Cambridgeshire now more than ever and we can all work together to tackle abuse and safeguard those who need us the most. So please do report any worries to us using any of the above methods.

Setting ‘code words’ with family and friends can also be an important option during these times. It may not be easy for victims to call police but if an arranged safe word or phrase is in place like “did I leave my scarf at yours?”, can let the other person know that they need help.

We would also urge neighbours to stay in touch regularly, either over the garden fence or through the window, and for victims to inform them of their situation. You could arrange so that if something in particular is put in the window, like a vase or a book, it could be a visual sign that they need help.

Speak to other partners
If you do not wish to speak to police direct, there are plenty of charities and organisations who are also on hand to listen and help safeguard you.

  • National Domestic Abuse Helpline – 08082000247
  • National Stalking Helpline – 08088020300
  • Cambridge Women’s Aid – 01223 460947
  • Fenland, Huntingdonshire and Peterborough Refuge – 07787255821
  • LGBT Domestic Abuse Helpline – 08009995428
  • Honour Based Abuse Helpline – 08005999247

Worried you might do something you don’t want to do
We understand that these unprecedented times can lead to financial and mental and physical health worries. Arguments can get heated and there’s no longer the opportunity to leave the house and cool off by socialising with friends and family.
For tips on how to relax and get away to avoid doing something you don’t want to, visit

You can also visit our website any time for more advice and support on the signs, tackling and living with domestic abuse.

We hope you find this useful. Please remember that we are here for you, you are not alone and we want you to help us to help you stay safe.

Thank you.

Virtual Duck Race

Today would have been the annual Mayor of Whittlesey Duck Race on the Bower raising valuable funds for the Mayors good causes. This event would normally attract hundreds of families as they enjoyed the 1000 ducks making their way down The Bower and at £1 a time this would have been a great financial boost the Mayors good causes which were Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall, The Whittlesey Army Cadets and The Young Technicians, however all is not lost and even though no money will be raised from the sale of tickets you can still enjoy the thrill of the 2020 race which with improvisation and editing will hopefully give you something to smile about. As a bit of fun for the children we ask you to list the winning time that you think will be of the winning duck its a free entry . The time range will be between 3mins 30 to 5 mins 30. The length of the course is 22 metres. Whoever is the closest the Mayor will donate a small prize to the closest once we are all back to normal. The race will be shown here on Facebook Whittlesey Sports Association at 6pm, entries must be made by 5.30pm – Come on give it a go.

Mayor of Whittlesey Cllr Mrs Julie Windle
