Offer for Wrights of Whittlesey

Established in 1955 – David and Shirley are very well known business personalities within our town, have supported and sponsored many organisations and events throughout their business years.

Placed on the market – when they decided to look forward to a well earned retirement.

Hopefully the ‘new’ owners will keep some of the traditions that the shop has given for the last 60+ years.

Time has moved on and Wrights do have their own website:

More Burglaries…

I do NOT want to be alarmist, but we are getting more reports of crime and especially burglaries, it maybe just a ‘spike’ or the time of year, however I keep promoting, that anyone see’s anything remotely suspicious – please report it, – it is the only way that the Police can then target their stretched resources.

Between 11:30 and 14:30 on Tuesday 15th August 2017 a caravan was stolen from the area of March Rd, Coates. The caravan is described as a White Eldis Supersiroco, Twin wheel caravan and has distinguishing black and white bubbles on the side. Anyone with any information, please call the Police Non-Emergency number 101 and quote crime reference CF0468180817.

There has been an attempted business burglary in Coates on March Road. A vehicle has driven down the side of a property to an outbuilding. Attempts have been made to gain entry but failed. If anything has been seen or heard in this area. Please contact 101 and use reference CF0466730817.

Parking Issues…!!

It is not going away – sorry – as the population increases, more cars per household, garage full up with junk, bicycles and the freezer. Cars parked on pavements, double parked on the highway and on the wrong side at nigh-time, the issue can be debated for-ever.
We may count ourselves very lucky in that ‘we’ still have free car parks and No Traffic Warden (anymore), our PCSO’s do carry out ‘some’ enforcement but they have many other duties besides ‘parking’.
For ever hearing at various meetings, issues of illegal and inconsiderate parking, during the school run is especially emotive to those who take and collect their children, but what about the residents they block in at times.
I do know that our PSCO’s do visit school areas during term times and have been known to issue tickets on occasions.

In parts of Peterborough some residents enlisted the local NHW team to carry out the following along with taking photos of the offending vehicles – This is NOT coming to Whittlesey as far as I am aware – that’s unless you know differently!

Serious Accident @ Whistling/Millennium Bridge Corner

Still a very dangerous corner if you’re not very aware, even after some road improvements a few years ago. When coming from Fengate/Peterborough the corner is almost ‘blind’ until you are actually in the corner itself.

Early today a head on accident, which I understand involved a vehicle which had been involved in a crime incident.
Luckily no one seriously hurt I am told.

Our correspondent informs me, that on passenger seat of the red BMW is what appears to be a pretty hefty ‘Safe’

No matter how slowly you approach the corner from the Fengate end, if the vehicles coming in the other direction ‘cut’ the corner – it is jump on the brakes time….

Whilst we’re on the subject – it appears very few of ‘us’ are keeping to the 40 mph speed limit, most times I drive North Bank, impatient drivers not happy with 40, will insist on over-taking, only to be caught up at the Dog-In-A-Doublet Bridge turning – Ha..

Many thanks to our correspondent aka A.C.

It was a Quiet Sunday….

I was out and about around various parts of Whittlesey for a few hours this afternoon, all seemed normal for a Sunday afternoon. Just after I arrived home the Air Ambulance landed somewhere near the Manor Field. Whilst I was there, the youths were having a good time in the Skate Park, there was a big Bowls match going on and people and children enjoying the play area.

There was not many people at the Fun Fair being held in the Ivy Leaf Car Park, work on the Bridge near Aliwal Road is progressing, and a ‘Happy’ man Darren caught a nice ‘Chub’ in the Bower, the lively fish tried a couple of times to escape whilst he attempted to weight in ~ justover 3 Lbs and then it was put back into the river.
Hoping for a quiet week ahead….

A good week in many respects…
Yes I almost couldn’t believe my eyes, when – All (3) Public Toilets are open for business.
For how long – well lets hope forever, but going on the history I wouldn’t hold your breath for too long.

The ‘Travellers’ who were encamped at Whittlesey Railway station last week, have moved on, I see there was a ‘notice’ placed on the fencing nearby which covered the whole car park area – yes they have left a ‘small’ amount of rubbish which hopefully cleaned up.

The #Bridge# – Over the Kings Dyke Crossing takes another giant leap forward, with the announcement that the contract for the preferred bidder has been agreed and is due to be signed in the near future.

Good work by our local Police team in respect of bringing to court the suspect who maybe responsible for damage to a great number of vehicles some 11 days ago.
Irrespective of the Police advice for Social ‘Trolls’ to curtail their opinions in naming and posting photographs – they continued to do so.
It has been explained that this is against the law – it is only a matter of time – that one or more of these ‘Trolls’ will be prosecuted – I also understand that there has been several individuals who have received ‘private’ warnings where libel has been threatened.

Further to my article last week on new businesses opening, my apologies to Sarah W @ ‘MealHeart’ who has been open now for some 3 months.
Sarah’s father is Tony Watts a well know, now retired local window cleaner.

MealHeart is open 6 days a week (Closed on Mondays)

I have not yet tried myself but several I have spoken too have been very positive.

Finally I was sent this early this week and as long as it does not contain any libellous insinuation to anyone I am happy to pass it on.

Look What Is Happening So Very Close ….

News from the BBC©
Fiona Onasanya to use wages to combat Peterborough fly-tipping.

An MP has said she will use her own wage to combat fly-tipping in the area.

Fiona Onasanya will use more than £800 of her wages to take away bulky items that get dumped. The council currently charges for collection of bulky items and electrical goods.

The Labour MP for Peterborough said the council need to take “more responsibility”.

The council said there was no evidence to suggest that free collections reduce fly-tipping.

Just think of all the money I and my friends have saved FDC over the last 10 years collecting tons & tons & tons of Litter & Rubbish.
In fact the Charity Commission advises community groups to work out – their worth to society and councils when carrying out their annual accounts….

News that Peterborough City Council have issued the latest PSPO for various offences in and around the city, including defecating in public area’s.
Well it wasn’t so long ago that FDC put up some signage at Kings Delph Lay-bye where most nights up to 8 trucks are parked up.
When the dirty object was spotted we were supposed to use a highlighted water paint on it to warn others.
Where have the signs gone?
Where has the water based paint gone.
I can tell you that the dirty objects are still there – and may I suggest even that Fenland bring in these ‘new’ PSPO’s that Kings Delph Lay-bye and put on their priority list – I doubt very much it will happen – prove me wrong – I will be more than happy.

Tesco to stop selling Plastic Bags…!!!!
View the complete story Huffington Post or The Guardian or Tesco Bags of Help

Environment campaigners have applauded Tesco’s decision to scrap 5p carrier bags in favour of 10p ‘Bags for Life’.

The supermarket giant announced this morning that it will stop selling single-use plastic bags from August 28, replacing them with long-lasting 10p alternatives which are made from 94% recycled plastic.

According to Tesco, the move follows a 10 week trial which led to a 25% drop in plastic bag sales, with ‘Bags for Life’ replaced fro free when they begin to wear out.

Online customers will still be able to opt for single-use carrier bags, but the retailer said that 57% of this group already opt for a bagless delivery.

The supermarket chain said sales of the more expensive bag would be used to fund community projects across Britain.

Greenpeace UK welcomed the decision, saying it was “great to see major retailers moving away from disposable plastic”.
“For too long we’ve seen plastic as something to be used once and thrown away,”

This is a good start and I hope other major retailers follow this example.

We are holding a series of workshops to start an informal discussion with you on the future of libraries in Cambridgeshire. As a key stakeholder, you are invited to join us to explore the challenges and opportunities for the County Council’s service and help shape the future of the service.
We want to explore ideas for new models that meet the needs of our communities and are financially sustainable, and need your ideas and suggestions to inform this work and say how libraries can continue to thrive. FOWL & Library Update

So again, after all the ‘noise’ on social media about the Animal Experience – which by the way had nothing to do with Friends of Whittlesey Library – but received a lot of flack which in some cases bordered on abusive.
The event as can be seen is now sold out.
Thanks to all those who bought tickets to support the event – which was sponsored by Whittlesey Town Council and is another event to be proud of supporting children in our community.

Tonight Friends of Whittlesey Library (FOWL) held a committee meeting of which I am member, 8 of us to support our local Library.
Funding from Cambs CC for libraries is in short supply again this year and I understand there will be NO new books purchased.
All magazine subscriptions will now be cancelled and they are looking at perhaps stopping Newspapers in the future although no decision as yet.
The next event that FOWL will be putting on will be ‘Pennyless’ – a Folk Group, which will be held on the 7t October at 7pm
(Tickets not on sale as yet and I understand will be £5 inc nibbles & a raffle).

We were informed on how library services are advancing with Open Access in some areas, whereby the public can access a library using their Library Card – outside normal working hours – we don’t think this will be coming to Whittlesey.

The friends will be supporting the annual Christmas Tree Festival.

A separate post will shortly be done on a consultation on the future of Library Services.
