More Crypto News – Been Crytojacked !!!!

One of the first signs of being hacked or having programs installed without you knowing is that your computer slows down…..on mobile devices battery life generally get much less….
Here is the latest from Cambs Policing Unit..

So, what is cryptojacking?
Cryptojacking is defined as the secret use of your computing device to mine cryptocurrency.
Cryptojacking used to be confined to the victim unknowingly installing a program, this could be initiated by opening an attachment from an email or clicking on a link, the most common form of malware delivery.
However, if you surf the web and a webpage has been compromised then cryptojacking doesn’t need a program to be installed. (JavaScript runs on just about every website you visit. So when you load a webpage, the in-browser mining code just runs. No need to install)

The simplest way to protect yourself from cryptojacking is to install a cryptojacking blocker. Installing a cryptojacking blocker means adding a browser extension so that it blocks a list of domains associated with the cryptojacking code.

If your device is compromised, you may or may not experience a slowing of the PC or Laptop. If it is a mobile device compromised, then the battery life may be effected. For more information visit the following link.

Kings Dyke Bridge or Tunnel

Just been asked – why is there tunnels showing on the latest plans.
I was to believe that a tunnel under the railway was being built for Forterra (Brickworks)
to make it easier for them to transport materials from one side to the other without impacting the road/bridge – I maybe wrong…..however if this is the case, maybe do away with a bridge entirely and build a Bigger Tunnel…….Then there is the cost….are Forterra paying for this to be built! – remember they are one of the landowners who will have benefitted from selling their parcel of land …..and maybe get a ‘free’ tunnel thrown in as well.
Never mind the commercial sensitivity of all of this…..at some stage ‘transparency’ of what’s been going on will all come out…..by which time – it may well be forgotten about…

K – D X – Spin & Spin & A Public Relations Disaster…!!!!

The Kings Dyke Bridge – Saga..
I have never met or spoken with Councillor Ian Bates, Cambridgeshire County Council’s chairman of the economy and environment committee, – but his press release today at various publications can only be egg on his face as the Council spokesperson – I do not envy his position.
The news is out (sort of) and some of our councillors would have been aware of this financial disaster for some time.

Kings Dyke Bridge – latest costing £30 Million ++++

I put my hands up – I also grossly under-estimated the short fall (I expected it to be double the initial costs – I was wrong and say so) – Then I haven’t had any details like some for the last 5 years.
Now we look to James Palmer the Metro Mayor of the combined authority to dig and I mean dig deep into coughing up the shortfall. The shortfall as has been revealed today….

However more delays means more costs!!!!
Amongst the ‘spin’ given by Cllr Bates, some of which may well be true, the one thing he omitted was the ‘fact’ the considerable delay(s) will and must have contributed a great deal to the increases in costs.
The other well known fact being we in Fenland live on a very boggy landscape and this should have been well investigated before-hand.
No I don’t know the answers – what I do know is that this latest statement should be regarded as a public relations disaster……
More to come….There are a number of Cambs CC who are not be very happy about these latest revelations and may well causes hold ups….

For we poor residents who have waited 10 -20 or 40+ years for this Bridge to happen – we continue to wait …… and hold on a minute – how long is the actual Bridge itself – 80 metres…that’s NOT 800 metres but 80 metres,  – 5 years to get this far – and some Councillors asking ME why I am making a mockery of the issue

Quote Cllr Bates Cllr Bates “Whilst the overall budget required has increased from earlier estimates to just under £30 million, an independent review of the project and construction costs reveal that the benefit of continuing with the scheme remains extremely high.”

Let us hope so for all of us…..

Could it be the demise of FOWL

Unfortunately I was unable to attend Tuesday evening meeting, however I quote an extract from the secretary below.

The group of which I have been a member and committee member since its early days, have done fantastic work to keep our Library/Learning centre as it is today.
Many events raising funds for several enhancements and an excellent conduit to Cambs Library Services, who have been very supportive.
As I have posted several times, Use it – or Loose it….

Library service come under severe pressures at times when Councils look for places to cut/save money…. by having this group we ensured the importance of having this facility.

For the time being the Library/Learning Centre along with FDC’s local Hub, remains safe.

As our secretary states we are unfortunately an elderly bunch and at times find it challenging….. If you think !!!! – you could help, a couple of hours a month is all that is required, then why not get in touch or even come along to the AGM on Tuesday 09th October at 18:30 an informative talk will be given by local historian Maureen Watson.

e-mail :- friendsofwhittleseylibrary@aol.co.uk

Unfortunately the decision was taken to discontinue The Friends in its present form as, apart from the fact the committee is aging and physically unable to continue to carry out the moving of shelves etc, no volunteers have stepped forward to take on the post of Secretary.
The discussion and subsequent decision made by the committee present at the meeting last night is outlined below and included in the Minutes.
I am sad this step has been taken but feel it was inevitable as, without younger volunteers both sitting on the committee and helping at events, the present committee has all but reached its shelf life!

Burglary Day Of Action

Dear resident,

We’re holding a day of action to tackle burglary as the evenings draw in and the clocks go back next month. Activity is taking place across the county today (see below) as part of Operation Aware, the force’s drive to catch offenders and reduce offences.

There are crime prevention events across the county and crime reduction officers will be joined by PCSOs, Specials and police cadets to improve security in ‘hot spot’ areas.
Arrests of people suspected of burglary have also been made across the force.
Last year there were 299 burglaries in the county in October, more than any other month.

To improve your home security, visit our website here https://www.cambs.police.uk/A-Z/Burglary

Thanks for your time

Scammed £1 Million a Day….

We keep on pushing, national press now making a big story over the amount of people and money being scammed daily – why is it that here in Whittlesey and area at least 2 people every week are still falling for these fraudsters.
There are some very clever scams going on but many still fall for the simple ones….
Why not have a read of this fantastic booklet..
They are available at Whittlesey Library or I can supply.
An hour of simple reading could save you a great deal of ‘pain’

Cambs CC & NHW hope to run an awareness session on reducing crime and e-scams probably in December – more when all arranged.

The Day I nearly met Rupert Murdock

In late 1987 I was made redundant again, and in my mid-30’s was finding difficulty in finding a new job. It was recession time which the government didn’t admit too (again) – which didn’t help.
I saw a small advert in one of the national newspapers, asking for someone with technical knowledge in electronics & broadcasting to phone them about a start up company with very exciting times ahead.
I phoned the number and after a brief interview , was offered a face-to-face interview at the Haycock Hotel in Wansford. At the interview were 2 men, Peter Payne and Andrew Neil – after about 45 minutes I was told that the interview was a success and I was offered the job as ‘the’ Installation Engineer for SKY TV.
My employment number was 002 (Peter Payne being 001) –
I met Andrew Neil on several occasions over the next 3 years.
Andrew Neil went on to become the editor of The Sunday Times and today is a powerful political commentator on various broadcast medium platforms.

Derek Jameson 1988

Sky was – and still is – based on an industrial estate in Isleworth, West London, well away from the central London HQs of the BBC, ITV and Channel 4
From day 1 – when I started to install Satellite TV systems into mainly shops, shopping centres and Sky TV’s employee’s, who included a chat show host of the day Derek Jameson, and a few others who I can not remember.

Our fortunes were sparse to say the least –
Our company was ridiculed by everyone, broadcasters, press, celebrities and Joe Blogs.

Murdoch was determined to make this the jewel in his empire. Every week more money would be provided – Andrew Neil returned to editing the Sunday Times in January 1990 to see off the about-to-launch Independent on Sunday. Murdoch then took personal control of Sky TV at a time losses were running at £10M a month, with the launch of rival satellite broadcaster BSB imminent.

By the end of our first year our team had grown to around 100, I being promoted to Area Manager and then Regional Manager in that time. Another year I became the National Service Manager for the UK.
One of my last challenges was to set up an outside broadcasting unit (I had no knowledge what-so-ever) – for the AC/DC concert @ Donington Park in August 1991 The two-hour show was performed before 72,500 spectators and included real cannons,
It was filmed in 35 mm Panavision and had 26 cameras that included one situated inside a helicopter. Although not quite a disaster, it was not broadcast live, and was eventually broadcast in a mix of our recording and that of the other units.
Alas by the end of 1991 ‘we’ had achieved all our goals and targets – the installation of one million Dishes to domestic customers, and the blow away and amalgamation of BSB to become BSkyB.
We were all made redundant at Christmas 1991 and it was my sorry job to finish 397 staff of the Installation Unit.
Many other parts to this story perhaps for another occasion – but the moral was and is – Mr Murdoch made a phenomenal success – blowing away all those critics of the early days, they then queuing to get onto a Sky Platform.
Today he may well have lost control of the Sky empire to Comcast, but it will have made him and his sons a vast amount of Millions if not Billions ££££.
Disney (whom I also worked for) is about to take over the rest of the empire (Fox & All)
Alas time moved on for me, and I went back to sea in 1992 until 1997
That’s another story for another time.
Did I have any shares in Sky TV – No -I didn’t – what a pity….and No I have never met Rupert Murdoch – but I’ve been in the same building on several occasions – does that count!!!!
