Low Life – Dumps Asbestos

One of Low Life favourite dumping places is near Decoy Lakes near Eastrea. Many occasions of fly-tipping has been found.
FDC’s rapid response team are very good, however ‘asbestos’ takes careful handling and disposal and there is the cost of course.
If you see any fly-tipping you can report it via FDC’s phone number 01354 654321 or on-line at FDC’s website.

Reporting of Footpath & Highways Issues

Thanks to RS for the following:-

Cambridgeshire CC has a reporting tool for highways at :-

https://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/travel-roads-and-parking/roads-and-pathways/roadworks-and-faults/

This will also provide fault report tracking.
They have the responsibility for pavements.
I suspect it will be much quicker to report directly to CCC rather than going via councillors who would end up at Highways anyway.

More Cyber Criminal News

Yet another misuse of legitimate computer apps by cyber criminals.
The following was reported in the Independent 3 days ago:

Criminals are using dating and selling apps to find targets for violent robberies and carjacking’s across Britain, The Independent can reveal.
Victims have been stabbed, thrown from cars and held at knifepoint after arranging to meet people through Grindr, Gumtree and escort websites.

Police said some victims are too embarrassed or intimidated to come forward, meaning offenders cannot be tracked down.
Recent weeks have seen a spate of attempted carjacking’s at meetings arranged using the LGBT+ dating app Grindr in Greater Manchester, with one victim stabbed several times for his car keys.
Other violent robberies have taken place at locations where victims thought they were meeting escorts, or prospective buyers for vehicles or high-value goods sold online.

I am not aware of any crimes like this being reported in Cambridgeshire.

Walk To Remember – Sue Ryder 2019

As previously posted my wife Connie will be taking part in this year’s
‘Walk-To-Remember’ – In aid of the ‘Sue Ryder Foundation’™ based locally at Thorpe Hall Peterborough. Last year she raised a fantastic £301:00 for the charity.
She will be taking part in this year’s ‘Walk-To-Remember’ which was highlighted in last month’s ‘Fens Magazine©’ thanks to Natasha for advertising the event.
Takes place on the 19th May 2019
There are a few other Whittlesey Folk joining in this year and all would be grateful for any sponsorship or donations. On my travels this week, mentioning the fantastic cause of the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Foundation, several friends have already given donations and I have collected £25:00 so far + Connie has a ‘Just Giving’™ Page on which she has raised £50:00 so not bad for the first few days of fundraising.

If you would like to help The Sue Ryder Foundation and help Connie perhaps better her target of last year you can go to this page:-

Local Election Information

There appears to be confusion and misinformation on social media.
I am only dealing with ‘Whittlesey’.
All registered voters should have had a ‘pink’ coloured card advising them of their:
(1) Ward area.
(2) Date of election (2nd May 2019)
(3) Number on the electoral register
(4) Whether registered as a postal voter
(5) Information on how to get help

Nominations for those who wished to stand – has closed and a full list of candidates for both District and Parish/Town Wards can be found on FDC’s website:-

https://www.fenland.gov.uk/MayElectionNotices

There are several Wards uncontested, which means those candidates who were nominated are automatically elected**
Wards which were uncontested for Fenland District Council.
Bassenhally Ward – 2 councillors elected uncontested.
St Andrews – 1 councillor elected uncontested.
Stonald Ward – 1 councillor elected uncontested.

Wards which were uncontested for Whittlesey Town Council.
St Andrews & St Mary’s North – 2 councillors elected uncontested.

Stonald Ward – 2 councillors elected uncontested

If you live in one of the above wards (uncontested) you will NOT receive a polling card.
In the case say for Bassenhally Ward, you will receive a polling card for the Whittlesey Town Council election 5 candidates for 4 available seats.

** A councillor becomes officially elected 4 days after the holding of elections.

I’ll go to one of my pet arguments, in that you the electorate have candidates – who would be councillors that have ‘NEVER‘ attended any council meetings, planning meetings or community meetings – they are standing on a ‘Political platform’ – the question to ask them is: – What have you done for Your community and Why do you want to become a ‘councillor’ – Why can they not be bothered to ‘see’ how councils work and the governance around councils…..
I do attend many meetings weekly and monthly, sometimes more than one a day and I have done so for many years – Reporting on this Web-Blog – Facts and Figures.
I do so at my own expense, time and commitment.

What’s Happening @ The Library….

We have visually impaired residents, double buggy prams, mobility scooters all ‘trying to use the path besides the Library.
The scaffolding has been in situ for at least 6 weeks if not more….it was put there for safety reasons to install 6 new double glazed windows, the windows have been installed so ‘why’ is the scaffolding still in place.
I hope the ratepayer is not paying a daily charge for this scaffolding which is now a hindrance to those I mentioned.
6+ weeks to install 6 windows…..it is unbelievable.

CAB – Citizen’s Advice Bureau comes to Whittlesey most Friday mornings, Whittlesey Town Council contributes several Thousand £ every year to support this service, which is invaluable to our residents and I fully support 100%. However it has come to my attention, that residents from March and Chatteris are using ‘our’ service – If there are only 5 slots available, and some of these are taken up by people from outside our area, then ‘if’ someone from the Whittlesey area wants an appointment they maybe all gone.

This is NOT a fault of the CAB – Maybe WTC should be asking for a contribution from March and Chatteris Town Councils!
I am a member of the Rural CAB and I will be asking questions.

Beware Of ‘Spoof’ Numbers + Today’s SPAM – Updated

Criminals are so clever (with their friends) they can easily ‘spoof’ phone numbers, mainly 0800 numbers which are not easily recognised by their phones.
An example being 0800 158 3209 which is a ‘real’ Barclays Premier Number, but again can be spoofed. The advice is if you’re not sure, put the phone down – and call the Bank/Company on a different number – on the back of your Bank Card, also if the call came in on your landline number – advice is use a mobile to call the originator back if you ‘really’ want to talk to them.

Thanks to our reader ED for the following SPAM purported coming from Virgin – NOT
You should know who and when you are paying bills and for how much.
If you can not remember, it is advisable to call the number on your bill.
Below is a give-away – they should at least know your name, check carefully the link, these can look very much like the real thing.
Be careful.

Hello,

We’re having difficulty processing your payment. We suggest double-checking the card details,
Kindly visit your (removed) and update your account.
Your payment method will be retried automatically over the next few days.

Kind regards,

WTC Meeting – Reports Part II

Posted in News | Comments Off on WTC Meeting – Reports Part II

Report on the WTC Meeting Wednesday 11th April 2019 Part I

Disclaimer: These observations are not the ‘official’ minutes of the meeting, these are supplied by Whittlesey Town Council, normally (1) month following the meeting and can be viewed on their website.

Purdah: It is important to note that pre-election rules restrict activity wider than just publicity. Use of council facilities and resources; the member’s code of conduct, developing new policies and holding of events – including some meetings – featuring elected officials should all be carefully considered during a period of heightened sensitivity.

The term ‘purdah’ has come into popular use across central and local government to describe the period of time immediately before elections or referendums when specific restrictions on communications activity are in place. The terms ‘pre-election period’ and ‘heightened sensitivity’ are also used.
https://www.local.gov.uk/our-support/purdah/what-purdah-means-practice

The agenda for evenings meeting was published on this web-blog 05th April scroll down.

8 members of the public, missing was several ‘new’ candidates standing at May 02nd election including my opponent Mrs Webb – who as far as I am aware has never attended any WTC meetings ever….

3 councillors given apologies, Curtis, Whitwell, and Laws – none apology as per usual Garratt.

Condolences to Mrs D Laws – who’s partner Robert passed away earlier this week.

Main Items reported only….

A presentation by Mr Andrew Hodson – Pegasus Group, acting on behalf of developer of land adjacent and around the ‘new’ Kings Dyke crossing, indicated that, planning and development of the land would include industrial, commercial, offices and possibly a hotel.
The ‘thrust’ of the development was to create employment opportunities.
Kings Dyke CrossingThe Bridge – Cllr Boden made a ‘personal statement’ (under purdah rules – above) and this was not an official statement from any Council.
“The first phase of the development – the clearing of the land is complete and the contractor ‘Kier’ has fulfilled their contract and have been paid.
The second phase to build the road/bridge is now open to tender and it is hoped that this process will be completed by July.
There are commercial negotiations going on which are confidential and there can not be a ‘running commentary’ whilst this is happening.

Public Forum: SR made comments that Whittlesey enjoys new white and yellow lining around the town.
The state of the port-a-loo at Kings Delph was raised.

Police & CCTV Reports: The monthly Police report issued by Sgt Lugg is distributed to councillors and members of NHW.
The CCTV report will follow in part II

Finances: Cllr Dorling gave the year end figures and accounts. There was approximately 92% spent in the 2018-19 year, an underspend (around £7,600) which was proposed carried over to the ‘Reserve Fund’

Other business:
Whittlesey Railway Station:
Cllr Bristow stated that Greater Anglia were still committed to an hourly service to Peterborough – but this will not be happening 2019.

He also stated that he believed there would be improvements to the station including car parking taking place this year.
Speed Monitoring: Taking place on the A605 in both Coates and Eastrea, the devices can be moved and will be placed in other roads within the area.
Vandalism: Several reports around the New Road/Latersey area including the allotments.
New Council Building: The latest costings were discussed and it is envisaged that the total cost including refurbishment could be around £600,000
The project maybe subject some VAT – however consultants maybe engaged to mitigate some of part of the VAT at a cost of £1,900 + VAT!
Whittlesey Mud Walls:
As per discussion at the last planning meeting, it was proposed that ALL the Mud Walls within the area be given listings.

Date of the next meeting: Which will be the annual parish meeting and that of the new council.

I am Roy Gerstner.
I am standing for election as a ward councillor for St Mary’s Ward South as ‘Independent’ at this May 02nd election.

My publicity material has been delivered to the electorate in the ward of St Mary’s South.

As you may be aware – I attend most meetings of both WTC monthly and planning meetings.

I am the only member of the public to report on Whittlesey Town Council meetings and business. I do not hide behind anonymity – I am accountable for this Web-blog.

I report as I see and hear – there maybe the odd mistake and I am grateful to be corrected in this case.
