Water Levels and Rubbish

Although many complain about The North Bank & Thorney Road/B1040 being closed on a great number of occasions during the past 12 months. It appears that ‘we’ and area’s that the ‘Flood Plain’ protect have not suffered any major flooding for some time – which up until now prooves it is doing the job it was intended.
That said there are other issues with land-owners adjacent to the Whittlesey Washes who have seen levels rise on their land.
There is amount of rubbish being brough downstream and this collects on the river bank.
There is public spirited people who attempt to clear this up, but then have little support from Peterborough City Council – who promote themselves as ‘A Green City’

Catch Up This on BBC iPlayer

Just a very short ‘n’ sweet message (or maybe sweet and sour, depending on which way you look at it) but I just wanted you all to see this video featured on the BBC today. Please share far and wide – this could really help potential victims to see how organised and unscrupulous scammers are in their crimes. And please encourage people to tune into ‘Panorama: Spying on the Scammers’ this evening, Monday 2nd March at 20:30 on BBC One or catch up afterwards on iPlayer.

Dear All

Great Fen – New Local Geological Site

We are very pleased to announce that the Great Fen: Holme Fen and Whittlesea Mere has recently been designated a Local Geological Site, the geological equivalent of a Local (County) Wildlife Site. The area comprises the land in the northern part of the Great Fen that is owned by The Wildlife Trust BCN and Natural England.

This is the third Local Geological Site in the county (other than those in the Peterborough area) and the only one of the three that is in the Fens. The site has qualified as an LGS under all four categories ( Scientific, Historical, Educational and Aesthetic) which shows its importance in a cultural context as well as for its geological record of changes in landscape, sea-level, climate and ecology since the end of the last glaciation.

The site will link with the Fen Edge Trail via the village of Holme and there are good views down on to the area from the Farcet to Yaxley walk. The Great Fen already has several interpretation panels about the landscape history and further information on the geology will be provided in partnership with CGS.
For more details see

We hope to arrange guided visits to the site later in the year.

Baby Monitors & CCTV Advice

Yesterday, there has been media attention regarding the security of IP cameras and baby monitoring devices that are connected to the home Wi-Fi network.

https://news.sky.com/story/security-service-warns-smart-cameras-and-baby-monitors-could-be-accessed-by-criminals-11948142

The advice was disseminated by the director of the National Cyber Security Centre. (GCHQ)
This advice is not new, and does not appear to be in response to a specific threat but should form part of your general housekeeping when it comes to your home cyber security.
If your camera/device comes with a default password, change it to a secure one – connecting three random words which you’ll remember is a good way to do this. You can usually change your password using the app you use to manage the device. An example of a strong password using three random words could be:

1TableChairliGht9@ (table, chair, light, 1 and 9 and @)

  • Keep your camera secure by regularly updating security software. Not only does this keep your devices secure, but often adds new features and other improvements.
  • If you do not use the feature that lets you remotely access the camera from the internet, it is recommended you disable it.

To read the advice from the NCSC visit:
https://www.ncsc.gov.uk/news/consumers-urged-secure-internet-connected-cameras

I would strongly recommend that when connecting any new device to your home network, that you change the default password with a unique strong password.
Have you changed the default password for your home Wi-Fi router?

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
Many thanks
Nigel

For Every Good Bit Of News – There Is Still Some Not So Good

After several people reporting the state of our Zebra Crossings (almost an annual campaign) it is reported that ‘nothing/no action’ seems to have taken place.
The usual excuse is that it is winter and too wet!
So I thought I would let you know ‘we’ are not the only ones to suffer.

A good example this week was a publicity event with ‘Harry & Bon Jovi’ on the iconic ‘Abbey Road Zebra’ it is plain to see the state of it a day or two ago and what it looked like when The Beatles’ did there photo….self explanatory…

A Little bit of Good News

To some it may seem insignificant but the partial renovation/maintenance of The Bower Toe-Path is a very good result, I am grateful to Cllr Mrs Kay Mayor who held meetings with several parties regarding the overall maintenance of this very popular walk and Cllr David Mason who also has engaged with FDC.
The most urgent part(s) will be addressed and we shall await the results.
