More Scam News – Happened Here In Whittlesey

Yesterday I received several reports of another attempted ‘Telephone Scam’
I had one myself which is unusual! – the originator number was ;-
0103 754 7607 a quick ‘Google’ search came up with being a ‘Scam Number’
I was told – We are cutting off yor internet connection due to illegal activies…
Press 1 to re-instate your service.
Needless to say I did not press 1 and terminated the call.

One Whittlesey resident had 4 calls yesterday

Below from Nigel Sutton..
Good afternoon

A contact has received three telephone calls in quick succession. All are automated messages which state the following:

“We have been trying to get hold of you, there is an arrest warrant out for you by Her Majesty’s Custom and Revenue Service press 1 to speak to your case officer.”
The phone number is 07799639314.

PLEASE DON’T!

My contact did some social media research and it appears this type of call has been reported elsewhere by people of various ages.
This is not how HMRC would contact the public and although obviously a scam to some, it will cause anxiety and distress to others perhaps resulting in them contacting what is clearly a mobile telephone number and potentially losing money or sensitive information. (And to most we know that HMRC would not use a mobile number, but again not always obvious)

Please consider disseminating this as wide as possible using social media and contacts.

Thank you for your assistance.
Nigel

Cambs County Council & FDC – CORVID Info & Help

These are the ‘Official’ local Council Website/Links regarding The CORVID-19 Virus issues.

http://www.fenland.gov.uk/coronavirus

Please find below the latest Covid-19 update. Feel free to share this message with your members, volunteers or partners.
Monday, 16th March 2020 COVID-19

We understand the concern that the coronavirus pandemic is generating. While for many people it will be a mild illness, for older people and those with underlying health conditions it can be a more serious illness and we all need to work together to protect these more vulnerable members of our communities.
You will be aware that the Prime Minister yesterday offered significant new advice on how we manage the COVID- 19 pandemic.

There is a considerable amount of work being done by Cambridgeshire’s Local Resilience Forum where all public sector organisations come together to support community resilience and help slow the curve of the virus.
There are some really simple steps we can all take to protect ourselves and others to stop the spread of Coronavirus, such as regularly washing your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.

Cambridgeshire County Council is providing regular updates on its website here:

Coronavirus Medical Supply Scams Prey on Fear

As headlines buzz with the latest news and developments on the Coronavirus outbreak, scammers and threat actors are piggybacking on the fears of consumers everywhere.

They are becoming more resourceful in their schemes and are constantly monitoring the web, preying on our fears and relying on the fact that we’ve let down our guard while we watch world events.

The fact that the physical world is slowly quarantining itself does not mean the dangers of the cyber world are fading. It’s tough to juggle both your work and your family’s safety, so in an effort to make your online interactions safer, we’ve listed a few of the tricks scammers might deploy during this period.

Looking to buy a mask that offers up to 99.99% percent protection against Coronavirus? Ran out of hand sanitizer and you’re looking to buy a whole lot more but can’t find any? These are the types of offers we get either through email or bogus ads.

While these websites may seem legitimate, as they abuse popular logos, they’re mostly just trying to draw on your fear of a COVID-19 infection. The products are not real, nor are those online vendors. They are just scammers interested in getting your credit card details or even getting you to purchase and pay with Bitcoin (which in itself should raise suspicion).

Remember if is sounds to good to be true…..

Whittlesey Town Council

https://www.whittleseytowncouncil.gov.uk/

You can search for your Councillor on the above website.

CORONAVIRUS: COVID-19

In view of the current circumstances of the coronavirus and following government advice and guidance

Whittlesey Town Council will be closed to the public with immediate effect until further notice.

The Town Clerk will still work from the office at the present time to deal with phone calls and emails and her normal work.

All the community groups that use the Council Chamber have been contacted by the Clerk this morning (Tuesday 17th March 2020) and for the present time have been cancelled.
All have been informed they are welcome to come back when circumstances return to normal.

The Clerk has put a notice on the front door of Peel House detailing all this information about the office closure and has also put a list of all Councillors contact details on the entrance door.

We hope you all understand that these measures are taken to keep everyone as safe as possible during the current coronavirus crisis.
There is a lot of justified concern about the Coronavirus COVID-19 and what we can do to minimise the spread of the virus. It’s a fast-moving medical situation, and local guidance for our area can be expected to change quite quickly according to how things develop.

To find out what the latest situation is in our area, please check frequently at www.fenland.gov.uk/coronavirus where up-to-date information relevant to our area will be posted and frequently updated.

Normal Service Will Be Resumed!

Town Centre this morning…. Traffic lights, Barriers and a ‘Hole-In-The-Road’ – No workmen – then two ‘likely lads’ arrived, looked into the ‘Hole’ for about 2 minutes and then sat in their truck?

Asking Everyone To Be Careful….Social Co

Social cohesion is defined as the willingness of members of a society to cooperate with each other in order to survive and prosper. … Social cohesion contributes to a wide variety of social outcomes such as health and economic prosperity.

With ‘thousands’ of well meaning Social Media individuals setting up ‘Help Forums’ on predominantly on FaceBook™ – locally Wisbech, March and Whittlesey….
The majority of these very well meaning people have not been screened themselves either medically or basic DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service)(Ex CRB Check)…..

There has ‘already’ been incidents ‘locally’ where – some within this system has offered to go to the bank and withdraw money onbehalf of the elderly and/or vulnerable.

All I am advising is ‘Be Careful’ – there is an already well established ‘National’ groups who are looking after their neighbours – it is called Neighbourhood Watch – these members have been vetted and in Whittlesey’s case 95% have been in the group for over 10 years.
Besides national and local information the Whittlesey NHW Website has a dedicated CORVID-19 Page.

https://www.whittleseynhw.org.uk/

There are now literally thousands of ‘Groups’ raising money for food (We have Food Banks) – to £60,000 raised for basic soap and washing materials.
