Coronavirus-Related Fraud Reports Increase By 400 Per Cent

Apologies for this lengthy post – but it is important that everyone is aware…

Coronavirus-Related Fraud Reports Increase By 400 Per Cent in March

Please take a few moments to read the below press release which can help you detect and avoid Coronavirus related scams.

Recently the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) reported a new trend in fraud related to Coronavirus, or COVID-19.

Updated figures show there have been 105 reports to Action Fraud since 1 February 2020, with total losses reaching nearly £970,000.
The first report relating to Coronavirus, or COVID-19, was received on 9 February. There were 20 more reports that month. Since then, there have been 46 reports between the 1 March and 13 March, and 38 reports in just four days (14 March – 18 March).

What scams are we seeing?
The majority of reports are related to online shopping scams where people have ordered protective face masks, hand sanitiser, and other products, which have never arrived.
Other frauds being reported include ticket fraud, romance fraud, charity fraud and lender loan fraud.

Phishing emails
We have also received over 200 reports of coronavirus-themed phishing emails. These attempt to trick people into opening malicious attachments which could lead to fraudsters stealing people’s personal information, email logins and passwords, and banking details.

Some of the tactics being used in phishing emails include:

• Fraudsters purporting to be from a research group that mimic the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organisation (WHO). They claim to provide the victim with a list of active infections in their area but to access this information the victim needs to either: click on a link which redirects them to a credential-stealing page; or make a donation of support in the form of a payment into a Bitcoin account.

• Fraudsters providing articles about the virus outbreak with a link to a fake company website where victims are encouraged to click to subscribe to a daily newsletter for further updates.

• Fraudsters sending investment scheme and trading advice encouraging people to take advantage of the coronavirus downturn.

• Fraudsters purporting to be from HMRC offering a tax refund and directing victims to a fake website to harvest their personal and financial details. The emails often display the HMRC logo making it look reasonably genuine and convincing.

Superintendent Sanjay Andersen, Head of the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau, said:
“Fraudsters will use any opportunity they can to take money from innocent people. This includes exploiting tragedies and global emergencies.

“The majority of scams we are seeing relate to the online sale of protective items, and items that are in short supply across the country, due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We’re advising people not to panic and to think about the purchase they are making. When you’re online shopping it’s important to do your research and look at reviews of the site you are buying from.”

Graeme Biggar, Director General of the National Economic Crime Centre, said:
“We have already seen fraudsters using the COVID-19 pandemic to scam people looking to buy medical supplies online, sending emails offering fake medical support and targeting people who may be vulnerable or increasingly isolated at home.

“These frauds try to lure you in with offers that look too good to be true, such as high return investments and ‘healthcare opportunities’, or appeals for you to support those who are ill or bogus charities.

“The advice is simple, think very carefully before you hand over your money, and don’t give out your personal details unless you are sure who you are dealing with.

“We are working together across law enforcement, government and the private sector to combat this criminal activity and protect the public. If you think you have been a victim please report to Action Fraud.”

Protect yourself
1) Watch out for scam messages
Don’t click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails, and never respond to unsolicited messages and calls that ask for your personal or financial details.

2) Shopping online:
If you’re making a purchase from a company or person you don’t know and trust, carry out some research first, and ask a friend or family member for advice before completing the purchase. If you decide to go ahead with the purchase, use a credit card if you have one, as most major credit card providers insure online purchases.

3) Protect your devices from the latest threats:
Always install the latest software and app updates to protect your devices from the latest threats.

Crackdown On Knife Crime

Join us @ https://www.ourwatchmember.org.uk/

Officers in Cambridgeshire will be joining others across the country next week in an operation to tackle a rise in knife crime.

The week-long operation, aimed at taking weapons off the streets and tackling associated offending, includes a ‘knife surrender’ where members of the public can hand in knives without fear of prosecution.
Offences involving possession of a knife in Cambridgeshire rose by 10 per cent in 2019/20 compared to figures from the previous year. However, the figure remains below the national average and is in line with a rise in offences across the country.

Inspector Matt Snow said: “Our message next week is clear; please make use of the knife surrender bins next week – you could save a life.

“Knives ruin lives and it’s important we are doing all we can to tackle the issue.
“This amnesty provides us with an excellent opportunity to join with colleagues at other forces across the country to get knives off the streets.”

From Monday (23 March) knives can be handed into police stations in Wisbech, St Neots, Parkside, March, Histon, Cambourne, Sawston and Thorpe Wood.

If members of the public wish to surrender knives outside of normal enquiry office opening times, they are urged to use the yellow phones located outside to enquire if an officer is available to assist them.
Inspector Snow added: “When it comes to knife crime we focus on education as well as prosecution. It’s important that we talk to young people about the dangers of carrying knives and the potentially devastating consequences.

“I’d urge the family and friends of people who carry knives to encourage them to make use of the knife surrender. Even if you feel the person would never actually use the weapon, by getting rid of it you completely eliminate that risk and you could be preventing them from being prosecuted.
“If people don’t make use of the knife surrender and they are found to be carrying a knife in public, they could face a large fine and further prosecution by the courts.

“Remember, if knives aren’t taken out in public they can’t be used.”

It is illegal to:
–          sell a knife of any kind to anyone under 18 years old
–          carry a knife in public without good reason – unless it’s a knife with a folding blade three inches long (7.62 cm) or less, eg a Swiss Army knife
–          carry, buy or sell any type of banned knife
–          use any knife in a threatening way (even a legal knife, such as a Swiss Army knife)

The maximum penalty for an adult carrying a knife is four years in prison and a fine of £5,000.
Anyone who knows someone who carries a knife or weapon can report it anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or visiting https://crimestoppers-uk.org/.

More information on knife crime is available on the force website at www.cambs.police.uk/knifecrime

Statistics on possession of knife offences
February 2018/19 vs February 2019/20:
Cambridgeshire: 281 v 310 (+ 10%)
Cambridge City: 62 v 64 (+ 3%)
East Cambs: 9 v 14 (+ 55%)
Fenland: 21 v 15 (- 28%)
Hunts: 36 v 47 (+ 30%)
Peterborough: 137 v 150 (+ 9%)

Scam Alert – Sky Beware..

The scam call went as follows:

I got a call this morning from Sky , This very nice woman said as I haven’t called out an engineer in 4 years they changing me to a low risk account, at 33% less per month. Wow great I was over the moon, this person was very articulate and very amiable, then she asked for bank details to set up a new direct debit, I told her they already had my details and refused to give them on the phone, still plausible she gave me a phone no. to call the Sky helpdesk and check this out…. I called Sky on 150 and they have said it’s a brand new scam, they had never heard it before, it’s now reported to police and Sky’s offices, so if you get a call, it is really plausible but don’t fall for it

If you don’t have a Sky account it should hopefully be clear that it is a scam. But the criminal may then say that you did have an account in the past and then try and get information out of you.

A few key points in relation to identifying scam telephone calls:

Just because a caller knows your name does not make them genuine. They may be in receipt of stolen data which includes your name and telephone number.
Do not trust the telephone number displayed on the phone itself. Telephone numbers can be spoofed, which basically means made to look genuine.

If you don’t recognise the voice the caller could be anyone.

Verify suspicious calls especially those that request disclosing personal information especially bank information. Call the organisation they claim to represent back using a tried, tested and trusted method. If you use the same phone, ensure there is a dial tone first.

Take 5. Five minutes, five hours even five days before you make any decision. Ask a trusted friend, carer or family member for their thoughts.

The Police or bank will never call you and ask for your bank account information, your bank card details or transfer money out of your account.

The Police will never call and ask for your PIN number and then state they need to send an officer to collect the card as evidence.

Be suspicious of any call that refers to COVID-19 or coronavirus and offers testing or attempts to get you to push a button on your phone in order to hear information about the virus.
There is a lot more advice and resources available to help protect yourself from a range of other scams. Cambridgeshire Police are active members of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP) coordinated by Cambridgeshire County Council.

They provide a range of services, products and advice, so for more information please visit  https://cambridgeshireinsight.org.uk/capasp/

Boots High Causeway to Close

The chemists in High Causeway will close at the end of August, although the one at New Queen Street Surgery will remain open.

A Boots spokesperson said: “At Boots UK we continually review our store locations to make sure they are where our customers need us most.

“It is never a decision we take lightly when looking to close a store. We have taken the decision to close the store on High Causeway, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire and can confirm the store will be closing at the end of August 2020.

RG Note, I supposed the writing was on the wall, with having two outlets in Whittlesey.
I wonder though if Boots introducing charges for delivering prescriptions has anything to do with the decision. I do know that many transfered over to The Independent Chemist on Market Street.
