One Success For Roy Gerstner

Yes – I am going to appauld myself thank you Roy –

For some 20+ years I (and others) have been campaining for the banning or taxing of single use Plastics/Polystyrene/Cans/Bottles
at long last today the first result has come through and I and many will be somewhat happy at this juncture.
One small step for mankind – many more steps to take….

A ban on single-use plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds has come into force in England.

The measure, originally due to start in April, makes it illegal for businesses to sell or supply the items.

People in England use an estimated 4.7 billion plastic straws, 316 million plastic stirrers and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds each year.

Environmental campaigners welcomed the ban but called for a crackdown on further single-use items.

An exemption will allow hospitals, bars and restaurants to provide plastic straws to people with disabilities or medical conditions that require them.

Environment Secretary George Eustice said the government was “firmly committed” to tackling environmental “devastation” caused by single-use plastics.

Campaigners welcomed the move but said the items formed only a “fraction” of the plastic waste littering the environment.

Sion Elis Williams, of Friends of the Earth, said ministers “must also do more to challenge our throwaway culture by forcing a shift away from all single-use materials in favour of reusable alternatives”.

Tatiana Lujan, of environmental law charity ClientEarth said straws, cotton buds and stirrers were “some of the most pointless plastics out there” and the ban on them was “a no-brainer”.

Call for Future Deveopment Sites – Fenland

Just so there is no confusion – this is part of the Fenland Local Plan – area’s identified are for consideration – you can make comments to FDC.
Go to the link below and all area’s so far indentified as of interest are shown.

Good afternoon
Fenland District Council is currently preparing a new Local Plan.

The Council held a second ‘Call for Sites’ exercise from 28 July to 08 September 2020 providing landowners, agents, developers, and other persons with an interest in land, an additional opportunity to submit sites to be considered for inclusion in the emerging Local Plan.
The Council has now published an addendum to its ‘Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (Stage 1)’ report, which sets out all sites which were submitted to the Council during the second Call for Sites.

The SHELAA Addendum report, along with an interactive map showing the location of all sites submitted is available at:

https://www.fenland.gov.uk/shelaa

All new sites will be assessed shortly to determine their suitability for allocation in the Local Plan.
Kind regards
Edward Dade
Shared Planning Officer

Todays Scam News…

Have you received a message like this

Above is a screenshot of a real and recent example of a scam DVLA vehicle tax message.

At first, it appears quite official, but if you read the text on the right-hand image it does not make sense.

Criminals know that the moment they send and you receive the text, email or instant message, it will cause one of several reactions, here are two of them:

  1. Ignore and delete. (I don’t have a car, it looks a scam)
  2. Install fear that you have an unlicensed vehicle, you don’t want to be in trouble so you click on the link START NOW and use your credit card to pay.

The criminal wants the second reaction and unfortunately too many people react in this way, but it is through these emails I hope we can steer everyone to the ignoring and deleting of this and similar scam messages.
DVLA will not contact the public in such a way to tell them their car is untaxed.

For further information about scams aimed at motorists, visit:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/dvla-warns-motorists-to-be-aware-of-scams

Many thanks, and if you can forward these messages on to others I will be grateful.

Apple iOS14

Good morning

On the 16/9/20 Apple launched iOS14 for the iPhone, within this update was a new privacy feature in the form of a tool that adds a small orange or green dot in the corner when an app makes use of the microphone or camera.
If the dot appears, it means that an app has accessed one of those pieces of hardware recently and may be doing so to spy on the phone’s user.

An orange light refers to the microphone, while a green one indicates that the camera is being accessed. If it does appear, swiping down from the corner of the phone to open up the control center will show which app was doing so. The control center should show either an orange or green dot, as well as a message indicating which app is responsible.

This appears to be an excellent privacy feature should cyber criminals install malware/spyware on an iPhone without the user being aware. Android does not appear to have a similar feature built in to their operating system, but I am led to believe there are apps that perform a similar function.

As always, any questions please ask.
