Merry Christmas – Flood Warning today 25th December 2020

A Flood Warning has been issued by the Environment Agency.

Flood Warning in force: B1040 Thorney to Whittlesey Road to the South of the River Nene.

Flooding is expected for: B1040 Thorney to Whittlesey Road to the South of the River Nene.

Immediate action required.

Heavy rain has been falling on the River Nene catchment over the past few days.
The Whittlesey Wash flood storage reservoir is being operated to protect nearby communities from flooding.
The rising levels in the Washlands will result in flooding of the B1040 road. Whilst the Flood Warning is in force, the Local Authority may close the B1040 for safety reasons. Diversionary routes will be put in place and further updates will be available through local media.
This Flood Warning is expected to stay in force for several days until water levels recede.
Please follow diversionary routes until the local authority re-open the road. We will be closely monitoring the situation, and this message will be updated by Saturday, December 26 or as the situation changes.

Another Flood Alert in Force…

A Flood Alert has been issued by the Environment Agency.

Flood Alert in force: Lower Nene.
Flooding is possible for: River Nene between Wansford and the Dog-in-a-Doublet Sluice to the east of Peterborough.
Over the last 24 hours we have seen heavy rainfall in the River Nene Catchment. This means that the River Nene is now rising, which will lead to flooding of low lying land and roads close to the river from the evening of Thursday, 24th December onwards. We expect the river to remain high throughout the next few days. Our forecasts indicate that flooding to properties is possbile, however it is unlikley, and therefore flood warnings are not expected to be issued. Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.

We are constantly monitoring river levels, and have staff in the field checking for blockages and clearing weedscreens. This message will be updated on Friday, 25th December, or as the situation changes.

Another Flood Warning ….

A Flood Alert has been issued by the Environment Agency.

Flood Alert in force: Middle Level of the Fens in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.
Flooding is possible for:
Middle Level, including Pondersbridge, Ramsey St Mary’s, Benwick and Welney.

High levels of rainfall have been recorded at the Chatteris rain gauge as a result of persistent heavy rainfall yesterday and overnight.  Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is expected.  We expect flooding to affect Middle Level, including Pondersbridge, Ramsey St Marys, Benwick and Welney.

Further light rainfall is possible over the next 24 hours.
We are closely monitoring the situation.  Our incident response staff are checking defences and liaising with emergency services.

Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.
This message will be updated this afternoon Thursday 24th December, or as the situation changes.

Flood Warning – North Bank

A Flood Warning has been issued by the Environment Agency.

Flood Warning in force: North Bank Road alongside the River Nene, east of Peterborough and west of Dog-in-a-Doublet Sluice.

Flooding is expected for: North Bank Road alongside the River Nene to the east of Peterborough and the West of the Dog-in-a-Doublet Sluice.
Immediate action required.
Heavy rain has been falling on the River Nene catchment over the past 24 hours. During periods of high tide the river will be unable to discharge into the sea, resulting in tide lock conditions. This is likely to lead to localised flooding at North Bank Road from the early hours on 24th December onwards. Whilst the Flood Warning is in force, the Local Authority will close North Bank Road. Diversionary routes will be put in place and further updates will be available through local media. This Flood Warning is expected to stay in force for several hours until tide lock conditions improve. Please follow diversionary routes until the local authority re-open the road. We are operating the Dog-in-a-Doublet sluice to discharge water during low tide, and reduce the flood risk as much as possible. We will be closely monitoring the situation, and this message will be updated on the 24th December, or as the situation changes.

Fenland/Whittlesey/Cambs Goes into Tier 4

I suppose it was going to happen with the very increasing numbers ‘catching’ the Virus, and admissions to hospitals on the increase…..there is I am sorry to say only one reason this has happened nationwide – people – who have either not been careful or not followed the rules / restrictions – I know someone will disagree – so be it.
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/tier-4-stay-at-home
All of Cambridgeshire is to move into the highest tier of England’s Covid restrictions, joining Peterborough which is already in tier four.

The areas currently in tier two will move to tier four – stay at home alert – from 00:01 GMT on 26 December, Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced.

In tier four, people cannot travel in or out of the area and all non-essential retail must close.

Mr Hancock said the changes were “necessary to control the virus”.

Farewell to Dr M Maddula @ NQS

Please see the following announcement by  Dr M Maddula.

We as a practice would like to wish him all the very best for the future.

I have an announcement to make to the good folk of Whittlesey and Stanground PPGs.  After working in the NHS for forty years, twenty of which have been at Stanground and Whittlesey surgeries, I decided that I have done my bit for Queen and Country and so I will be hanging up my stethascope at the end of December.
The above decision was not an easy one to make. It took a lot of soul searching but in the end I felt it is the correct one for me to make.
General Practice has gone through a lot changes (and not all for the better ) in the past two decades.  It has been starved of resources.

  1. a) Financial…. In 2018/19, for every 1£ spent in the NHS , only  eight pence went to Primary Care despite Primary Care being the setting where almost 90% of contacts take place.
  2. b) Human resources…It has become increasingly difficult to  recruit and retain young doctors into General Practice. Large numbers of them are emigrating to Canada, Australia and New Zealand for better work life balance.

However, despite all its limitations, General Practice still stands out as the shining jewel in the NHS crown.
Finally, I would like to end by saying that it has been a privilege and an honour to have served the patients of Stanground and Queen Street Surgeries. I would also like to wish you all a very safe Christmas and fingers crossed 2021 should be a much better year for all of us…..
