Saxon Pit – John Elworthys Article @ CambsNews

The debate over Saxon Pit, Whittlesey, is no longer simply about planning applications or industrial regulation. It is about health: the air we breathe, the noise that disrupts sleep and the dust that settles on homes and gardens.

The newly published Cambridgeshire County Council Public Health report into operations at Saxon Pit has attempted to answer a central question repeatedly raised by residents: are the activities on the site harming public health?

The report offers a mixture of reassurance and caution. While it concludes that there are “no identified risks to public health” from certain exposure pathways based on existing data, it also acknowledges significant limitations in evidence and calls for further work to understand cumulative and mental health impacts.

Government To Give Cash Payouts To People in Financial Crisis

BBC Article 16-01-26

A new funding scheme will give access to emergency cash for people on low incomes across England.

The Crisis and Resilience Fund beginning at the start of April will provide £1bn annually for the next three years.

People will be able to apply for emergency funds through their local council, whether or not they currently receive benefits.

The new rules say councils can give money to people in financial shock where there is “a sudden, unexpected expense or drop in income”, like a broken boiler, the loss of a job or to prevent people from entering crisis.

It is a replacement for the temporary Household Support Fund which had been extended on a rolling basis since it was set up in 2021, but was due to finish at the end of March.

The level of funding is broadly the same as the previous scheme, leaving some councils disappointed that there has not been more money allocated.

A recent survey for the Local Government Association showed most councils in England did not believe the current funding will be sufficient to meet local welfare needs.

The cash element is a significant change to the past scheme, which the government hopes will help fulfil a manifesto pledge to end “mass reliance on emergency food parcels”.

Whittlesey Woman in 80s – Instructed To Leave £8,000 Under Wheelie Bin

An elderly Whittlesey resident in her 80s was taken advantage of when she was scammed of £8,000 after ‘investigators’ pressured her into handing over the money.
A spokesperson for the police said the vulnerable woman received a call from a withheld number just before Christmas from a man who said his name was DC Shepherd from the police fraud squad and that £250 had been taken from her bank account and two men were in custody for it.

The person acting as ‘DC Shepherd’ urged the elderly lady to withdraw cash from her account and leave it in a safe place under her wheelie bin at the front of her home for detectives to collect as part of the investigation.

Keen to help and concerned for her savings, the victim went to the bank and withdrew £5,000 from one account and a further £3,000 from another before placing the money in an envelope under her wheelie bin for someone to collect moments later.

The police’s cyber and fraud prevention officers have seen an increase in courier fraud scams where people are asked to leave cash in “safe places” to be collected later by investigators, or in some cases, people are asked to send cash and other valuables to addresses elsewhere in the country.

The spokesperson said: “Traditionally, courier fraudsters would send a ‘courier’ to collect cash from victims in person, but this marks a recent change of tack.”

News Update On Bower Footbridge Replacement…

Unfortunately, the decision has been taken to defer the Bower Footbridge replacement works until the next navigational closure window (from October 2026 onwards). This decision has been made due to a lack of sufficient confidence that the current programme would allow all works to be completed within the existing navigational closure period. To eliminate associated risks, it has therefore been deemed necessary to delay the works.  Please be assured that the existing footbridge will continue to be closely monitored throughout this period to ensure public safety is maintained.

Notwithstanding navigational consent, I have instructed MGroup (CCC’s framework contractor) to ensure that all third-party activities are appropriately formalised, and that the new structure is manufactured and stored to mitigate current risks. I would be extremely disappointed if works do not commence in October 2026.

Best regards,
