Bogus Police Officer Warning

We’re urging residents to be vigilant following a number of reports of scam phone calls across the county.

Since September there have been around 20 incidents of people, in particular elderly people, being called by bogus police officers and bank officials asking them to transfer funds or withdraw cash for collection.

Detective Inspector Jenni Brain said: “Thankfully in the majority of cases the victims haven’t fallen for the fraudsters convincing stories.
“These people often target the elderly or vulnerable resulting in the loss of thousands of pounds.
“It’s important to remember that police officers and bank officials will never ask you to withdraw or transfer money or hand over private banking details.
“We ask that friends, relatives and neighbours of elderly people help us spread this message to prevent anyone else falling victim to these crimes.”

Advice to prevent you becoming a victim of bogus calls:

  • Hang up if you ever have any doubts about someone who has called you.
  • Ensure the line has been terminated before making any further calls. You can tell if the dial tone is present or by using another phone.
  • Never give out your PIN number, banks will never ask you for it.
  • Never give bank cards to anyone at your door, even if they say they’re from the bank.

If you believe you are a victim of this scam, contact police on 101 or report online www.cambs.police.uk/report

Examples of incidents:
Mr G received an email claiming his TV licence payment hadn’t been received and was asked to call to sort it out which he did.
A few days later he received a call from Barclays Fraud Team questioning large payments he had supposedly made.
He was told it had all stemmed from the TV licence email and he’d been scammed. They closed his bank account over the phone and he was asked to transfer £60,000.
Mr G was told a detective from Scotland Yard would meet him at his bank in the coming days.
When Mr G and his wife arrived, the bank knew nothing of an appointment and told him there was no such thing as a Fraud Team.
Thankfully after speaking to the bank, Action Fraud and the police, Mr G was able to get his money back.

Mrs B received a call from an officer at Charing Cross Police Station who claimed he had a woman under investigation for money laundering.
The officer was able to confirm Mrs B’s card details and knew how much money was in her account.
He sent her off to her local bank to withdraw money and then to shops where she had store cards to withdraw Euros. He asked her to make note of how the staff reacted, what they were wearing and told her not to touch some of the bank notes so they could be finger print tested.
Later in the day a man collected the money from her home.
She was contacted a few days later and asked to withdraw more money. She couldn’t get to the bank so sent it electronically and was told her new card would arrive and all the funds returned but they never were.
Mrs B handed over around £12,000 of which about £8,000 she is unlikely to get back.

Crackdown on Drink & Drug Drivers

We’ve launched a crackdown on drink and drug drivers this December and are urging motorists not to ruin Christmas for themselves and others.

Officers across the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit (RPU) will be conducting additional stop-checks throughout this month to combat drink and drug drivers.

Between October 2018 and September this year, 239 people were arrested in Cambridgeshire on suspicion of drug driving and 649 people were arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

This included 79 suspected drink drivers and 31 suspected drug drivers during December – the month of last year’s campaign.
Being caught drink or drug driving could result in a 12-month driving ban, up to six months in prison, a fine of up to £500 and a criminal record. These can lead to job loss, relationship breakdowns, foreign travel restrictions and significantly increased insurance premiums.

Chief Inspector Jon Roche, Head of Roads Policing for Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire said: “We want people to remember Christmas for all the right reasons. It should be a happy time but driving under the influence of drink or drugs can change that in a heartbeat.
“Our campaign is not about spoiling peoples’ fun. It is about ensuring they don’t do something that jeopardises it. Drink and drug driving can bring financial hardship, pain and loneliness which is a far cry from Christmas festivities we all want to enjoy.

“If you are going out this Christmas please plan ahead and make sure you get home safely. Book a taxi or agree a designated sober driver within your group. It is also important to ensure you are not over the limit the next day as this can still impair your ability to drive.”

More than 45 pubs across Cambridgeshire have signed up to support the campaign by taking part in the ‘I’m DES’ scheme where participating venues give free draught soft drinks to designated drivers.
The initiative, led by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership (CPRSP), will aim to reduce the number of road traffic collisions caused by drink driving over the festive period.

A total of 48 venues have signed up to the scheme this year – triple the number of venues compared to last year and one of the highest recorded numbers in recent years.

To participate in the scheme, which runs throughout December, people just need to let staff in participating venues know they are a designated driver and ask for an ‘I’m DES’ wristband from a member of staff.
Officers are also urging members of the public to report drink or drug driving via the dedicated, confidential hotline.

The hotline: 0800 032 0845 is available 24/7, and gives people the chance to supply the police with information to help reduce the number of drink or drug drivers on our roads.

For more information about drink or drug driving, the law and the dangers it can cause, visit the force’s drink and drug driving page.

Thank you,
Corporate Communications

Be Very Careful As Christmas Approaches – Skims & Scams

The intended victim (IV) received a call on their landline.

The caller stated their name was Christopher Williams and that they were from Visa Verification.
The caller asked to speak with the wife of the IV (so the caller already knew the name and telephone number prior to calling)
Neither the IV or his wife have a Visa bank card so alarm bells sounded immediately.

The caller confirmed the card in question was in the name of the intended victims wife.
The caller wanted to confirm that the following transactions had indeed been made by the intended victims wife using the Visa card.

Netflix £17 for 1 year
John Lewis £37
Argos for £40
H&M ?

Of course they hadn’t because they don’t have a Visa card.
The call was terminated.

The IV then dialled 1471 and noted that the suspect number had a local STD code of 01223, the number was dialled but unavailable. Remember from previous emails I have sent, the number displayed does not necessarily mean it is genuine it is most likely a very different number that originated from over the internet.

The IV called Visa Verification on a UK number 0800 891725.

They confirmed that Visa would never ring a customer in such circumstances.
They confirmed that they were aware of this type of scam.

For further information about avoiding scams, please visit www.actionfraud.police.uk and www.cambridgeshireinsight.org.uk/capasp/

Please warn family and friends, scam calls ARE being made across Cambridgeshire on a regular basis. To report fraud or computer crime contact Action Fraud.
