More & More Scams

——— SCAM WARNING ———

Action Fraud has received 63 reports about a scam in which fraudsters target people with offers of “low cost” loans or “free” government grants.
What the victims aren’t told is that the money they’ll receive is actually an advance payment for Universal Credit.
The criminals use the personal information they’ve obtain under false pretences to make an application in the victim’s name.
After the fraudsters have taken their “fee” from the advance payment, the victim is then left to pay back the total amount once their repayments begin.

How you can protect yourself:

  • Never share your personal or financial information with someone you don’t know and trust, especially if it’s in response to an offer of “free money” or a “free grant”.
  • Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) staff will never approach you in the street or ask for your personal/financial details over social media.
  • If you have concerns about your benefits, you should visit
    www.gov.uk/contact-jobcentre-plus
  • If you suspect your identity may have been stolen, you can check your credit rating quickly and easily online. You should do this every few months anyway, using a reputable service provider and following up on any unexpected or suspicious results.

Burglaries in Wisbech – Robbers & Burglars are Very Mobile.

Police are appealing for more information after a series of burglaries in Wisbech.

Over the last four months there have been 26 burglaries in the town with the majority taking place in June and July. Due to their close proximity and similar targets police believe they are linked.
Most of the burglaries have taken place overnight, however some have been during the day. Many have been through forced entry with both homes and outbuildings such as garages and sheds being targeted.
The most recent offences took place last night with two garages and a shed being entered in Lerowe Road and another garage being broken into in Bush Lane. On these occasions nothing was stolen.

Additionally, on Monday evening (29 July) a woman in her 80s was assaulted, suffering minor injuries, in her home in Holmes Drive when she tried to stop a burglary in progress.
A man, described as white, slim build, about 5’ 8”, wearing a grey hoody and grey jogging bottoms, stole her handbag containing money and bank cards.

DC Adam Blake said: “While we are doing all we can to catch those responsible for these crimes I am urging the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to us. Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could help us with our inquiries.
“We have already arrested three individuals in connection with these offences, one of whom has been charged, but we believe there is a bigger group who is behind this series.”

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or report online at www.cambs.police.uk/report/Report. If a crime is in progress always call 999.

Information and advice about how best to protect your home from burglars can be found on the force website here www.cambs.police.uk/burglary.

Kind Regards,
Corporate Communications

Peel House is a former Metropolitan Police training accommodation in Regency Street, Pimlico, London SW1. It was built in 1907, and is in a conservation area, but not a listed building, and Westminster City Council has identified it as being “a building of unlisted merit”. In 2010, it was converted into 70 residential flats and is run by the Octavia Housing Association.[1]  (Source Wikipedia)

Courier Scam still going around…

I thought I would share the following news article about police arrests in relation to the dreaded courier fraud. I appreciate the police activity was not local, but it shows the extent of the problem around the UK.

Of particular note to the article, the criminals involved were posing as police officers, and they are still using the tactic of telling the victims to put their phone down and redial another number, whilst the criminals keep the line open fooling the victim into believing they have called in this case, the police.

Police remind your family and friends of this type of crime and that the police will never ask you to send them valuables and bank cards, by any means especially a courier/taxi.
