Money Mules

Clicking on one of these dangerous hashtags could land you in prison for 14 years

Santander have reported that an alarming amount of people under the age of 25 are being tricked into clicking on fraudulent hashtags and becoming money mules – a crime which can see lead to a prison sentence of up to 14 years. Money mules are individuals who allow criminals to use their bank accounts to transfer money associated with illegal activity, and are more often than not offered cash in return for doing so. Santander says that the amount of money mules has increased by 29 per cent in the last year alone, with 49 per cent of them being under the age of 25 – 70 per cent of people are said to be unaware about what a money mule actually is, which a factor which illustrates just how valuable unsuspecting social media users can be to criminals.

Prisoner slashed man’s face
A prisoner has had two years added to his sentence after he slashed the face of a fellow inmate.

Keiran Blair, 27, was spotted approaching another inmate by a prison guard at HMP Whitemoor, March, on 20 February at about 6pm.

Registered sex offender downloaded indecent images
A man who was placed on the Sex Offenders Register after being found in possession of indecent images of children has been caught with further indecent images.

Mel Simpkins, 23, was visited on 16 December last year (2018) by officers from the north-based Public Protection Unit (PPU) as part of a routine check on registered sex offenders who are managed by the unit.

Man converted home into cannabis factory
A man who converted his Wisbech home into a cannabis factory has been jailed.

Edvinas Gulbinas, 29, was caught growing the plants at the property in Welbeck Road when police visited to speak to him about a separate investigation.
