We Are All In This Together – Tesco Ramsey
Today’s good deed was to do shopping for two of our elderly neighbours, Jon B who is 98 his wife 95 and Colin G who is 89. Thinking Tesco Ramsey would be easiest as they are fussing clients! – At 09:30 there was a que of around 20 waiting in the correct way and the Police presence helped, but they cleared off after 5 minutes.
Once inside the store was a different situation, the isles are well marked and there is a one way system – Sorry Ramsey people can not comprehend this simple task, they were going the wrong way, herding too close together and some picking up fresh fruit & veg and then putting it back again…..I dare say it is not unique to Ramsey.
Anyway job done, that’s us in isolation now until next week’s good deed.
Our NHW volunteers will be delivering precriptions tomorrow.

Something A Bit Different – My Shipmates RIP
Today April 9th is the 50th anniversary of the stranding of the steamship ‘London Valour’
in Genoa Italy 1970
I represent the shipping company on many areas, created a website that has run for nearly 20 years and am the official historian of the company.
I organised the anniversary commemorations in Genoa 2010 when a group of 12 of us attended a very emotional day, with the British Ambassator + Consulate General joining us.
Unfortunately with the Corona Virus being what it is, we are unable to attend this 50th anniversary.
However I have been sent a very poignant photo of a deserted ‘Genoa’ with the Red Ensign (Red Duster) flying in the Marina Square.
The church bells all over Genoa rang in unison at mid-day.
(Note I was not on this ship when is ran aground – but sailed with some of the survivors,
I have been unfortunate to experience a similar incident in 1987 Quebec/St Lawrence River – I survived some did not – RG)

A Small bit of Good News – To an extent!
Whilst I was out delivering prescriptions yesterday on my mobility truck, I took my air quaility meter – and measured various gases and pullutants.
Pollutant levels along the A605 from New Queens Street Surgery to the Recreation Ground on Peterborough Road – were virtually zero….
No sulphur or sulpur dioxide.
One of the reasons maybe that our Brick Works have shut down the kilns and out of interest the last time this happened was 1969

No I Did Not Go To Tesco Hampton This Morning
My correspondent who lives in Yaxley informs me, that the ‘Que’ this morning at Tesco Hampton went for several hundred metres, and it took him around 40 minutes before he got into the store (08:30 this morning).
So probably not a good time to go.
Why not shop locally we have everything here…I hope.

Distractions – Very Easy For Our Elderly Residents
| We’re urging residents in the north of the county to be alert following reports of distraction burglaries in recent weeks.
On 24 March a distraction burglary took place in Worcester Road, Wisbech, where a woman fraudulently gained her way into an elderly man’s home by using his granddaughter’s name. She asked for cash for a bus but was stopped by a member of the family who arrived. On Friday last week (3 April) two women entered a home in Southwell Road, Wisbech, and pretended they were nurses and needed to check the elderly resident’s paperwork. Once they had left, the victim has realised they had stolen her purse containing bank cards. Also, on Friday (3 April) at about 10.30am a distraction burglary took place in Broom Close, Dogsthorpe, where a man let himself in with the victim believing he was a carer for her husband. The man’s female accomplice then stole the victim’s purse while he distracted her. On the same day it is believed the same pair targeted further houses in Dogsthorpe but were unsuccessful. Since the lockdown started on 23 March there have been five similar incidents across the county. In light of the current situation we are urging members of the public to be even more wary of letting people into their homes. “If you have an elderly relative or neighbour who lives alone it is worth talking to them about this type of activity by either giving them a call or sending them a message. “This is important advice we are trying to promote to prevent these cowardly offenders from getting into people’s homes.” LOCK – Is your back door locked? If not, lock it before you answer the front door as distraction burglars often work in pairs – one distracts, while the other steals. STOP – Are you expecting anybody? CHAIN – Put this on before you open the door. If you have not got one, it is a worthwhile investment. It will give you that extra ‘safe space’ and barrier between you and the caller. Anyone with information regarding this incident should call police on 101 or visit www.cambs.police.uk/report Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, . anonymously, on 0800 555111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org. Call 999 for live incidents where the distraction burglar is still at the property, or is due to return. For more information on distraction burglaries please contact Crime Reduction Officers Amanda Large on 07872 3577868 or Helen O’Driscoll on 07736 085238. |
