Farewell Renee….

I first met Renee in 1966 when her husband Colin (Jack) Mathews came to but the garage at Eastrea. Jack and his son Chris, lodged at our house for around 6 weeks, whilst they got to grips with running the business.

The owner was a Jack Bendle had run the small business for some 20 years and was retiring.
Renee moved to Eastrea and they bought a house on Whype Road. The business ran for about 25+ years – Chris however went and made his fortune on Oil Rigs.

Many friends came yesterday to say goodbye.
RIP –
Just a few months short of her ‘Hundreth Birthday’

WhatsApp Scam

WhatsApp Scam
The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) is warning the public about the continued increase in reports about scams where victims are targeted on WhatsApp by criminals pretending to be someone they know – typically their children.
Between 3rd February 2022 and 21st June 2022, there have been a total of 1235 reports made to Action Fraud linked to this scam, with total reported losses exceeding £1.5mn.
Criminals will usually begin the conversation with “Hello Mum” or “Hello Dad” and will say that they are texting from a new mobile number as their phone was lost or damaged. They will then ask for money to purchase a new one, or claim that they need money urgently to pay a bill
The criminal will provide bank details for the payment to be made to, with some coming back with further demands for money.
How to protect yourself:
  • STOP. THINK. CALL. If a family member or friend makes an unusual request on WhatsApp, always call the person to confirm their identity.
  • Ring the old number you have for your family member, several times if necessary to establish their number has changed.
  • Set up a password with your family members, so if you get this message you can ask for the password. Or ask them a question only your family member will know the answer to.
  • You can report spam messages or block a sender within WhatsApp. Press and hold on the message bubble, select ‘Report’ and then follow the instructions.
  • Never share your account’s activation code (that’s the 6 digit code you receive via SMS)

KD X News Update

A message from the King’s Dyke project team:

It was fantastic to officially open the new bridge over the King’s Dyke level crossing last week (Monday, 11 July). The hard work continues after hitting this major milestone with attention now focusing on the existing A605.

Work includes completing the eastern roundabout tie-in where there will be approximately two more weeks of two-way traffic lights, operating 24 hours a day until completion. We’d like to thank you for your patience and sticking to the temporary 20mph speed limit that is in place while construction work continues.

It has been brought to our attention, with the hot weather and following the bridge opening, people have noticed the ‘lake’ next to the new bridge – this is actually called Star Pit and it is private land. Residents will be able to tell you the history better than us, but it used to be an old quarry, it is extremely deep and dangerous so please don’t be tempted to swim or use Star Pit.

Finally, we know how well our videos go down so we have pulled together a timelapse one, which shows the work done from the very beginning to the opening of the bridge
