Thieves Steal 23 Catalytic Converters In Just One Week
We’re encouraging you to look out for suspicious activity, specifically in car parks, after 23 catalytic converters were stolen in just one week.
Over the past week thieves have targeted vehicles parked in the Trumpington, Madingley and Longstanton Park and Ride sites, together with the Queen Anne car park in Cambridge and the car parks at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
Catalytic converters are found in the exhaust system of every car and reduce the output of toxic gases and pollutants.
It takes just minutes for thieves to remove them and on many occasions, victims are unaware initially until starting their vehicle that they have been targeted.
Detective Chief Inspector Alan Page said: “This type of crime is extremely disruptive for the victims, and it is particularly despicable that these individuals have targeted cars at hospital car parks where people are attending for appointments or to visit a poorly relative or friend.
“Targeted patrols by dedicated officers are taking place, but we also need the public’s help.
“We would like to hear from anyone who was at any of those locations in the past week and may have noticed any suspicious behaviour or vehicles. We would also like to hear from anyone who may have information about who is stealing catalytic converters and where they are being sold.
“These offences are taking place in broad daylight. If you are using a public car park, business car park or a Park and Ride site please be aware of people jacking up vehicles or laying underneath them with a running vehicle parked nearby.
“Call us on 999 with descriptions of those involved and the make/model and registration number of the vehicle they are using.”
Between 1 January and today (25 October) there have been 400 catalytic converter thefts in the south of the county (East Cambs, Huntingdonshire, Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire).
To keep your catalytic converter safe, you can ask your car dealer for advice on locks or guards that are approved by the vehicle manufacturer and tested to Sold Secure Gold.
Alternatively, try to make sure your vehicle is parked in a garage overnight, or if you have a commercial vehicle, park it in a secure compound.
If this isn’t possible, park in an area that’s well-lit and overlooked and try to park so that the converter can’t be easily reached by potential thieves. Vehicles that sit high above the road are particularly vulnerable.
You should also register your converter and mark it with a forensic marker, which will make it harder for thieves to dispose of.
In recent months, the force has marked the catalytic converters on around 200 vehicles so they can be identified if stolen and sold on.
For more information about catalytic converter thefts, visit the force’s dedicated web page.

Exclusive Insight Into Life as a 999 Call Handler
If you have ever wondered what a typical Friday night looks like for a police emergency call handler, you’re in luck.
Cambridgeshire Constabulary are going to be offering the public a glimpse into the heart of policing as part of International Control Room Week.
We will be taking to Twitter on Friday 28th October, where we will be live Tweeting about every emergency call we receive between 4pm-11pm.
Detective Superintendent Michael Branston said “this will be the third year that we have celebrated International Control Room Week by providing the public with a snapshot of the many and varied calls my team of dedicated call handlers deal with. Friday nights are usually busy, and I fully expect our social media followers to be surprised by the volume but also really interested in the different types of demand we deal with each day.”
Be sure to tune in on Friday 28th, and follow us on Twitter (@CambsCops) in advance so you don’t miss out.

KD X Update
A message from the King’s Dyke project team:
The works have been completed along Funtham’s Lane and the temporary traffic lights have been removed (pictured).
This has allowed work to continue on the T-junction between Funtham’s Lane and the level crossing. These works are scheduled to be completed by the end of next week.
Following the work at the T-junction, the old A605 will be closed in both directions at the location of the level crossing to allow the fencing to be installed and the crossing to be permanently closed. However, access will be maintained for both residents and businesses from either side of the level crossing.

Further rainfall is expected later today, Sunday 23rd and into tomorrow Monday 24th October.

Major Debate Happening @ WTC This Weekend
If you have read my Council Report #1 – you will have have seen that an hour+ was spent on the item ‘ Heritage Centre’ and the debate on how the now £255,000 from
The Combine Peterborough and Cambridge Authority (Growing Fenland Project) may now be spent.
There are two differing arguments being put forward.
Option 1…..Spend ALL the money within the Manor/Manor Field Area.
- £45k Tennis Courts (although this is to support the current Netball training sessions), improved lighting and fencing.
- £110k Solar panels for the swimming pool
- £145k Synthetic pitch
- £30k to make good the cricket area
- The youth investment fund operated by Cambridgeshire County Council can be match funded up to £125k from the Heritage Centre, which could effectively release £250k for the Phoenix Youth Provision.
Option 2 Spend the ‘bulk of the money on the next stage for a ‘Relief Road’
Consultants producing a report for the next stage of applying for futher funding with some being spent on the Manor area.- As number 1 above
- As number 2 above
- Southern Relief Road
- Exhibiting some of the Must Farm finds at the library.
5. Levelling the Market Square to provide a safer area for events.
This week there will be a meeting of the (Whittlesey) Growing Fenland Partnership.
They will decide on what is put forward to the CPCA who will meet end of November.Naturally being the Town Councillor for the Manor Area, my intersts and those who have lobbied me are swayed to Option 1
I urge anyone who would like to make representation to the Committee – to do so
ASAP – and certainly before Tuesday. This can be done by sending an e-mail to
Cllr Gary Munns (WTC Representive) – garymunns@whittleseytowncouncil.gov.uk
