You’ve Heard of Phishing, But What About Quishing?

No, we’re not making it up, quishing is the latest trend used by scammers to get to your hard-earned cash.

The scam uses fake QR codes on parking machines, charging points, even restaurant menus. Once scanned, you’re taken to a bogus website where you innocently input your details thinking you’re paying for a service, when in fact, you’re sharing all your personal details with the scammers.

Our fraud and cyber security advisor, Nigel Sutton, has this advice…

–  Check… if the QR is on a poster in a public area, always check whether it appears to have been stuck over the poster, window, billboard. If the sign or notice is laminated and the QR code is under the lamination or part of the original print, chances are it’s more likely to be genuine

–  If in doubt… download the app from the official Google or Apple store or search the website on your phone, rather than scanning a QR code to take you there. It may take longer, but it’s more secure

–  Trust your instincts… if something doesn’t seem right, don’t share your details.

Fenland District Council Press Release:

Call for help to find breeders of abandoned dogs.

Three sets of young dogs have been abandoned in Fenland in recent months, leading to fears puppies are being bred and dumped when owners fail to sell them.

Most of the puppies were in good condition, but the coats of four spaniel / poodle cross puppies dumped in Wisbech St Mary were badly matted and needed attention.

Fenland District Council’s appointed stray dog service cared for all the dumped animals and was able to place them with rehoming organisations.
The council is urging anyone who finds themselves with animals they can’t rehome to get in touch to access help available rather than leaving animals at risk of harm.

Cllr Susan Wallwork, portfolio holder for Environmental Health, said: “It’s heartbreaking when animals are not properly looked after.
“There is support available so that an animal never needs to be callously dumped.
“We’d urge anyone who has information about who owned these puppies to let us know. It’s vital that we identify any irresponsible breeders in our area to prevent further harm and neglect of animals.
“Anyone who finds themselves with a litter they can’t home or animal they can’t keep should contact one of our local animal charities or us for help.”

In each of the recent cases the dogs have been picked up by the council’s appointed dog warden after being reported as stray.
The council’s stray dog service has covered the cost of vet bills, collection fees, food and welfare. Due to the animals having to be treated as lost, the dogs had to remain in kennels for seven days before being able to move onto rehoming partners.
The total cost can reach up to £200 per dog.

Five mastiff cross puppies were taken to a vet in March on Monday, July 3.
Two whippets were found in Manea at the end of June.
The spaniel / poodle puppies were found separately between end of February and beginning of March, but were all the same age and believed to be the same litter.
Anyone who breeds and sells puppies for profit or breeds and sells as a business must have a licence. Failure to have a licence can result in prosecution.

Fenland’s stray dog service always tries to reunite lost dogs with owners as quickly as possible, which can be achieved where micro-chips are present. By law, dogs must be micro-chipped by the time they are eight weeks old.

Ask – It Helps

Witnessing street harassment and not safely intervening, sends the message to those experiencing it that it’s okay and society normalises it.

Ongoing acceptance of street harassment contributes to a toxic culture. If you see someone experience street harassment, ask them if they are okay. This lets them know you stand by them, and that street harassment is never okay. We can all do this small yet powerful act.

By asking ‘Are you okay?’ we are no longer bystanders, we become active bystanders safely intervening on behalf of someone.

Last Nights WTC Committee Meetings……

Disclaimer: These observations are not the ‘official’ minutes of the meeting, they are supplied by Whittlesey Town Council, normally (1) month following this meeting and can be viewed on their website. Decisions and Voting at this meeting may be ratified and confirmed at the following months meeting

I attended as a member of the Community Projects Committee, the agenda was published previously on this web-blog.

Public Forum : Cllr Eamonn Dorling suggested no more money should be spent of the ‘Hanging Baskets’ and that the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Mr. Robert Windle informed the BIG BASH 2024 would be held on 23rd June and that the week building up to the 23rd would host various events.

Mr Alan Hobbs presented an update on the damage and vandalism being carried out to the Picnic Benches on The Manor Field –  he explained that ‘Vandals’ had caused considerable damaged which was now both difficult to repair and that costs (approx £500:00) to make secure could be involved, he would need help and support.

The Committee decided that funding of repairs would be futile and that the vandalism would still carry on – so the repair/replacement work will NOT take place.
Mr. Hobbs will make the Picnic Benches secure for safety purposes.
As and when the Picnic Benches become unuseable – they will be taken out and NOT replaced in the short/medium term until a forward plan is made.

Allotments : Some in a very poor state and letters being delivered to those plot holders.
Heritage Centre : Cllr Black working on it.
Market Square Planters : Cllr Mayor in discussions with FDC – However whatever is planted would require WTC/Volunteers to water and maintain?

Planning Committee :-
Public Forum : Mrs Day presented SaxonGate Residents concerns with the latest developments with regards to Noise & Dust mitigation.

Presentation by Allisons Homes for up to 175 houses off Drybread Road.

I am not making any comments about planning at WTC as it would be wrong for me to do so, as I now sit of Fenland District Council Planning Committee.
There will be minutes of the meeting, after being raified by full council – next meeting in September.

Controversial Planning Application

At tonights WTC Planning meeting, Allisons Homes making at presentation for 175 houses on Drybread Road (This is an outline application) there is considerable comments on the FDC Web-Portal. This has been before WTC in the past and was recommended for refusal on several grounds.
We shall see ‘what’ has changed if any in their proposals.
I no longer sit on the WTC Planning Committee as I now sit on Fenland District Council Planning Committee, so will take no part or make comments on the application.
