The Bower Footbridge To Be Replaced

At WTC’s meeting on Thursday evening, County Councillor Boden informed that Cambridgeshire County Council (Highways) are to replace/rebuild the ‘Bower Footbridge’
sometime 2025/26, the work is expected to take 6 weeks.
We have been asked ‘what would be the best time to close the bridge’ – if you have any views to share, contact me and I’ll forward.

The Bridge was upgraded around 10 years ago, in order that Prams/Wheelchairs/Mobility Scooters could use the bridge, it previously had 2 steps at either end.
It has been subject to vandalism at times.

Witness Appeal After Fatal A47 Crash

A man and wife who died after a fatal collision on the A47 at Thorney Toll, near Peterborough, have been named.

Emergency services were called at about 8.50pm on Wednesday (20 November) with reports of a collision involving a grey Nissan Pulsar and a grey Toyota Prius.

A passenger in the Nissan, Brian Spinks, 68, of Dines Close, Wilstead, Bedford, was taken to Peterborough City Hospital where he died of his injuries.

The driver, Sandra Spinks, 65 and of the same address, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and passed away yesterday (21 November).

The driver of the Toyota, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Two passengers were also taken to hospital, a woman in her 30s, with life-threatening injuries, and a man in his 20s, with minor injuries.

The woman remains in hospital in a critical condition. The injuries to the driver and second passenger are not thought to be life-threatening.

Can you help? We are appealing for witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw the vehicles in the moments leading up to it. We would also like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time with dash cam footage.

Anyone with information should report online via our website or call 101 quoting Op Switches. Please do not reply to this eCops message to report information.

Kind regards,

Last Of This Weeks Fraud News-Advice

Happy Friday all! On the final day of our fraud awareness push, we’re highlighting

Rogue traders

Rogue traders offer gardening work or maintenance services but the quality of work is often substandard, unnecessary or overpriced. They also use persuasive sales techniques to encourage people into making hasty decisions.

Prevention:

·  Always ask for references from recent clients

·  Get a quotation from more than one trader

·  Take your time, don’t be hurried into making a decision. Legitimate callers won’t mind if you ask them to come back later while you consider your options

·  Speak with family and friends to get their opinion on whether you need work doing on your home

For more advice on all the frauds we’ve focused on this week and more, visit our website and stay safe from the scammers!

Drink Driving: We Need Your Help

Dear Roy,

This is a reminder to venues across Cambridgeshire that a designated driver scheme organised to support the force’s crackdown on drink and drug drivers this Christmas will return in December.

‘I am DES’ is a national initiative where licenced premises sign up to offer an incentive to encourage customers to have a ‘designated driver’ within their party. The campaign ran for the first time since Covid in December 2023 across Cambridgeshire, with more than 60 businesses sign up in support
(the most we’ve ever had!).

We also saw a reduction in the number of people killed and seriously injured through road traffic collisions for that month compared with the previous year, with more than a 20 per cent reduction.

If interested in taking part, your business and venue location will be included in a press release highlighting this year’s police drink and drug drive campaign, and mentioning the I’m DES initiative, where drivers within a group can benefit from a discount on soft drinks only.

The terms and conditions will be within your control – you decide which soft drinks to provide an incentive on, such as draught only. Free soft drinks have been offered in the past but the economy is in a very different place than it was years ago, and therefore any kind of incentive through a discount will still be very welcome and allow you to take part.

Members of the public taking part are asked to say to venue staff “I am Des” or words to that effect and show their car keys. It’s up to yourselves if you wish to add anything additional to that. I know some of you have used wristbands or a stamp system to keep track of designated drivers before.

If you are interested or would like to know more, please email nick.southern@cambs.police.uk stating that you are interested or with any questions. Please do not reply directly to this eCops message.

Please also spread the word and forward to anyone you think would be interested in supporting this year’s designated driver campaign.

Kind regards,
