Sold Out – Biggest and Best Extravaganza 2024

I will publically like you say a BIG Thank You to Robert Windle who has put together another major event here in Whittlesey almost single handed –
We few volunteers basically turn up on the night.

That said 12 brave Volunteers supported the safety, road closures and event management from 11:30 until gone 20:00, it was COLD – the wrist bands sold out and the emergency stock had to be brought out.

I’d estimate during the evening well over a Thousand Children enjoyed the events and music along with their families. We only had one incident where 2 children went missing for a short period – they were found safe.

Along with Robert I’d thank Julie his wife and ALL the Volunteers who braved the cold dry evening plus all the shops and sponsors of the event, for what will be remembered as the biggest and best so far Whittlesey Christmas Extravaganza.

A comprehensive safey meeting is held before the event.

A special thanks to Lorraine @ Malcolm James Estate Agents, who every year opens her shop for Mulled Wine and Mince Pies…..Yummy…..

Kings Dyke Bridge – Issues – Update

I understand there is an ongoing social media campaign with respect of lack of update and information regarding the ‘problems’ at the KD/Ralf Butcher Causeway.
Below is a response from Cambs CC – Chair of Highways and Transport Committee.

One thing we have not had in writing before is that Cambs CC and The Contractor are in a
‘Contract Dispute’ – this means legal eagles are involved which will mean ££££ for someone?

Cllr Elisabeth Sennitt Clough is leading the Social Media campaign in order to get some answers….

Library Heating – Update

I was unfortunately delayed after attending the 4½ hour planning meeting at FDC yesterday – for the Whittlesey-On-Focus Group meeting, I joined online 20 minutes into the meeting.
As there was representatives from Cambs CC attending I informed them of the situation at Whittlesey Library (Being a Warm Hub) – main heating out of action and that a new replacement system is not planned until Spring 2025.

They have taken my comments away and will try and escalate upwards….

We wait in hope….

Petition Against Winter Fuel Allowance Loss

Good evening Councillors,
You will recall the tabling of a motion at the last full Council meeting regarding changes to the Winter Fuel Allowance, in order to help protect pensioners from fuel poverty.

One of the recommendations for this motion was:

Commit the Council to signing the ‘Save the Winter Fuel Payment for Struggling Pensioners’ petition being run by Age UK and write to all members offering them the opportunity to sign the petition themselves.

Please find below the link that will take you to the Age UK ‘Save the Winter Fuel Payment’ petition asking Government to call an immediate halt to the current proposal:

Save the Winter Fuel Payment | Age UK

Your support in signing this petition will, I’m sure, be appreciated by many of the vulnerable pensioners in Fenland who now find themselves at risk of fuel poverty following the Government’s decision to withdraw the much needed Winter Fuel Allowance.
Regards
Cllr Chris Boden
Leader of Fenland District Council

Piled wall will resolve major King’s Dyke crossing obstacle
26th October 2021Wisbech Standard Story – John E

Piling at King’s Dyke (Image: Archant)

Remember this article is 2021

Piling work has begun at Star Pit, Whittlesey, to conquer one of the major obstacles to delivering the King’s Dyke crossing.

The piling work started in September and is expected to last until early November. The pit is near the edge of the project and creating a strong enough support to withstand the new crossing Jones Bros contractors need to introduce extra stability.
They designed a new, highly engineered, improved solution than originally planned to tackle Star Pit by installing a piled wall.

The piles will be bored to a depth of 23 metres below ground level, before then putting in a steel reinforcement cage which is filled with concrete.

This new design will involve piling into the existing ground and will reinforce the Star Pit side walls and allow the road’s embankment to be completed.

Cambridgeshire County Council says the method is more robust and will increase the longevity of the asset which they will maintain.

Issues arose because of the decision in the early 1990s to allow Star Pit to be excavated until 2042 for clay.
Cllr Peter McDonald, chair of the highways and transport committee said: “We have been working with Jones Bros ever since they came on-board to design and implement this part of the scheme.
“Over the past few weeks, the focus has been on the ground conditions, which are worse than our tests initially found so we’re responding to this with a new and better solution around Star Pit.
“This specialist piling work is well underway and may be visible to the public so we wanted to explain.

“I’m pleased to say this won’t have any impact on the programme and we’re on track to open to traffic by the end of 2022.”
Rhydian Hafal, construction manager for Jones Bros, said: “By carrying out piling at the top of Star Pit, it means we can add extra reinforcement and reduce the load on the existing ground.

“The piling requires the material that is currently in the pit to act as a support for the pit walls and for the piles themselves, so this task can only be accomplished now, following the filling of the corner of the pit.
