WTC Residents Meeting / Ramsey Road & Church Street Issues

I understand around 60 members of the public attended and seeing the agenda – looked like the other radical suggestion was a HGV ban on the road 23:00 to 07:00 , there was updates on the yellow lineage between Bar Street And London Street and the resurfacing planned work.

400,000+ Hits on a simple web-site/blog

I am very humbled to say the least that over time the stats on my website are increasing week by week – month by month.

No councillor (I am not a councillor) in Whittlesey has information in the public domain as this site achieves.
Thank you – No hearsay here…
That said have you heard this weeks Faceless Book windup in Whittlesey…
Not only is ‘MacDonalds’©, Burger King©, Starbucks© and Sunway© all coming to Whittlesey next week but I’ve now been told that ‘Ex Alice’s Fruit & Veg is to become…
So why was there a planning application for an illuminated sign at last weeks planning meeting for

Now I could really spread what the owner of Morleys Old Garage/Petrol Pump site told me recently – of plans he had for the site….but I’m not going there until I see some proof.

Church Street/Ramsey Road Traffic Issues/Concerns

Please see previous post regarding a meeting to be held this Friday 15th at The Conservative Club – allowing residents to have a say on the issues/concerns.
Below is a copy of the letter written in consultation with several of my neighbours.
You will note there is some history and what I and they believe is a simple, cost effective to the major concerns.
I/we are more than open to anyone else’s practical, cost effective and simple solution.

If you have views and a solution please I urge you to go to the meeting, it is a fact….the situation will only get worse in time – now is the time to address the issues & concerns.

The Hero of Aliwal – Pub that was…!

Tonight’s picture – Car Park complete

We should all know the history of our local ‘Hero’  Sir Harry Smith.
I am only going to cover recent history and that is of the public house not that of Sir Harry…..

The picture here was taken in the early 1990’s
and comes from Mr Graham Martin
(a Whittlesey resident) who painted the
‘Pub Sign’
Graham spent some considerable time in order to copy as best as possible the previous signage.

This picture shows ‘The Hero’ in the 1970’s and it is probably this sign that Graham managed to re-create.

At this time there was no extension and the ‘Pub’ did take in the occasional traveller on a B&B basis.

Food was somewhat  limited to a bag of crisps if your were lucky.

The ‘Pub’ was modernised and an accommodation block built, for a short time the restaurant became popular – this fizzed out as time passed.
The B&B sort of worked but the reviews on ‘TripAdvisor’® were not very complimentary to say the least.
After the Landlord’s wife passed away it was only a matter of time for the place to close.

In 1952 there was 52 Pubs in/around Whittlesey (A list can be found at Whittlesey Library)
Fridays and Saturdays would see many trying to visit as many as they could before falling over.
Here is a comparison of one of the orginals that Graham had to work on.

I am not sure but one of my school friends of the 1960’s was ‘Ann Burgess’ who was a very good artist, after schooldays she would paint enamel Pub Signs for many establishments in and around the Peterborough area, maybe the original here is one of pieces of artwork.

Here is a picture of ‘The Old Hero’ – The Hero of Aliwal on Station Road Whittlesey near the junction with – Aliwal Road.
The arm from which the sign hung is still visible today.
‘The Hero’ on Aliwal Road was built around 1837 and the brewery ‘Watney Ales’ owned the establishment until the min-60’s when it closed.
The present owners have a ‘stone sign in the window to the right of the front door – ‘The Old Hero’

Here we have ‘The White Lion’ situated at Briggate, this was knocked down to make way for ‘The Hero of Aliwal’ on Church Street during the 1960’s

Just imagine 52 Public Houses in/around Whittlesey – all serving warm beer.

Todays Updates…

Work progressing on ‘The Monastery‘ – Market Street Whittlesey, part of the building will become a small B&B/Hotel – with I understand a ‘bar’ today the roofers were busy.

Good meeting this morning on updates from the ‘Mud Wall Group.

Nice Christmas dinner out with Friends of the Library (FOWL) at The New Crown – 13 of us – with a ‘story’ from myself – ask me about the day I won the Lottery!

Has a BIG bag of worms being opened in respect of the Ramsey Road/Church Street residents meeting next week regarding issues of Traffic etc… I’ve come across several who do not live on either road, but may have a vested interest – This could well lead to other Roads/Street residents asking for a similar meeting – I dare our issues are not unique.

On-going – Ramsey Road/Church Street Traffic Issues

Leaflets delivered by WTC councillors has certainly brewed up some contact and debate.
I understand that around 30 or so residents have already given notice to attend the meeting, and I re-iterate I encourage as many as possible to attend this meeting.
I am seeking suggestions from some of my neighbours who are unable to attend.
One thing is for certain – there is NO quick fix and there will be a number of residents unhappy with – what ever suggestions are made….more to come.

Trending….

With so much going on…. firstly I was ‘told’ quite categorically that ‘SUBWAY’ (Yet again) – was opening on Friday at the ‘Norwich & Peterborough Building Society’ building.
Here is a photo taken at around 12 o’clock on Friday 02nd December – NO SUBWAY – and  as my previous posts – Myself, and also the chairman of WTC planning are NOT aware of any change of use for this building.
I am NOT saying that a SUBWAY will or will not arrive in Whittlesey – but to those who categorically argued it had arrived – sorry wrong again.
It maybe a long time coming but steady work is producing some nice effects on the ‘Old Hero of Aliwal’ Public House.
It is to become a modern Vets which I am sure the town is in need of.

Further to my earlier posts this week, (click on pictures – to enlarge) the VERY emotive subject of Traffic, Parking and Highway issues is coming to a head once more.
The leaflets to resident (who maybe do not read this blog have now been delivered)
This is the correct version (Fens magazine was printed prior to venue being known)
My own investigations indicate it is a 50 / 50 split – for every resident I have spoken with there are 50% in favour of ‘Major’ road improvement and restrictions and 50% – mainly those who park on the road – do not want any restrictions placed.

I’m sorry but I am unable to attend this meeting, I like some have made arrangements long before this was announced – however I will make a written statement to our County, District and Town Councillors prior to the meeting and will seek my neighbours views for those who again may not be able to attend this meeting.

I strongly urge anyone ‘for’ or ‘against’ any suggestions that may come from this meeting to attend.

So besides everything else happening during a very busy week – Connie and I celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary.
A nice weekend in London staying at the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury and having fantastic seats at the Novello Theatre to see the wonderful  musical ‘Mama Mia’

I had not seen the film which made the show even more exceptional –
A real ‘Feel Good Factor’ – something I am sure we could all do with!!!!

Sorry to say I am winding down a little – time for some sunshine – there will be posts…
I am hoping for some feedback on the Residents meeting…

Finally for those who are unaware  ‘Tesco Opticians’

We’re writing to let you know that we’ve agreed to sell Tesco Opticians to Vision Express. The sale will take place on 4 December 2017.
From that date, Vision Express will take over the operation of the opticians practice in-store, and this will eventually be rebranded to Vision Express.
So on the date of the sale or shortly after it, we’ll start moving all our customers’ eye care records and contact information securely to Vision Express (UK) Limited.
That will allow your eye care to continue in the opticians at your usual Tesco store. We may keep a copy of your records, as required for regulatory compliance.
