KD-X Ralph Butcher Causeway Updates….#2

Nailed it! 680 steel pins secure King’s Dyke embankment Whittlesey.

Cambridgeshire County Council has confirmed that major progress has been made on repair work at the King’s Dyke embankment on the A605 Ralph Butcher Causeway near Whittlesey, with more than 680 soil nails now installed as part of the extensive ground stabilisation programme.

In its latest update, published on 22 October, the council said the soil nailing operation on the main embankment is complete, with work now focused on two adjoining areas.

Crews are also continuing to install drainage pipes and the steel reinforcement that will support the sprayed concrete facing — the crucial outer layer designed to hold the embankment firm for decades to come.

The soil nailing and concrete reinforcement phases are key to ensuring the long-term stability of the embankment.

Once the soil nailing and sprayed concrete phases are complete, the embankment will undergo a three-month settlement period before final resurfacing and the full reopening of both lanes — expected in early 2026.

Local councillors have urged patience, emphasising that the repairs are necessary to ensure long-term stability. Fenland Council leader Cllr Chris Boden has called for continued accountability from contractors, adding that the works will ultimately “deliver a permanent solution that protects public investment.”

Traffic monitoring continues daily, with engineers inspecting the embankment and managing the lane closure to keep disruption to a minimum.

Whittlesey councillor wants King’s Dyke reopened now….

Cllr Chris Boden, a town and district councillor, has called on Cambridgeshire County Council’s highways department to consider reopening the King’s Dyke crossing, which was closed over major safety concerns.

Cllr Boden informed members of Whittlesey Town Council that all the major structural work to repair the King’s Dyke crossing known as the Ralph Butcher Causeway on the A605 has been completed.

He told this month’s council meeting that the remaining work is not linked to structural safety, and therefore, he believes it would be sensible if the county council were to agree to open the bridge to two-way traffic once more.

The costs for the works are being fully met by the contractors, Jones Bros

If You Had Been Down At The Wood Today…!

This morning a small group of our ‘Friends of Platinum Wood’ planted some 800+ daffodil bulbs and 200+ snowdrops around the ‘bund’ area.

Platinum Wood is a Whittlesey Town Council initiative and project, it a 4 acre green space at the end of Yarwell Headlands, maintained primarily by Cllr Eamonn Dorling with a few volunteers, the area is being developed into a very nice space, to walk, rest and relax.

Plans Approved for Dog in a Doublet

After many years again being left derelict for the second or third occasion after its closure as a public house and restaurant.
‘I/we’ StreetPriders cleared the area up many years ago when I was chairman to stop it being an eyesore coming into Whittlesey.

In this recent case of unoccupancy and becoming derelict – no one cared enough to take up the challenge (why should they) – private land…

The owner of a former riverside pub near Peterborough has been granted permission to convert it into a family home.
Quaffins Ltd applied to Peterborough City Council for planning permission in December 2024 to change the use of the Dog In A Doublet pub on North Bank in Thorney.

Plans for the building, which were approved by city council planners on October 21 this year, will see the empty property transformed into a private five-bedroom home.

According to planning documents, the scale of the building will be reduced through demolition, with the rear demolition work taking the building back to what it was like before it was extended in the late 1970’s.

A planning statement reads: “Due to viability the owners of the building are unable to let it out to a new landlord to continue running it as a public house.

“Also, the manner in which the building was vacated has meant that the building is no longer fit for purpose without significant work.”

Whittlesey Election Day – NorthWest Ward

The election called by resignation of ex conservative councillor Elizebeth Sennitt-Clough.
Widely publicised being the 6th conservative councillor in recent years to have resigned.

Today there is a bi-election for the ward and some candidates have been actively campaigning to be elected.

It’s a cool, rainy day, and at 7:00am when the polls opened, there was no queue at the Bowker Way polling station (surprised). Postal votes play a large part in elections and I would think so on the occasion as well.

‘We’ Independent Councillors, are backing Martin Curtis who is standing as an Independent, and for anyone who hasn’t voted or can not decide I urge you to vote,
Independent – ‘we’ are here for the community.
I am a Community Councillor NOT a political Councillor.

Time will tell, the polls close at 22:00 and the count will be held at The Manor Centre Whittlesey.
I hope to publish the result as soon as they are announced.
