Can YOU Help Tackle Speeding in Fenland?

I/we have tried on so many occasions to get a ‘SpeedWatch Group Going’ but never got the number required. Some of us have done the online training.

From listening to concerns from the community in Fenland, speeding has been set as a priority for the local neighbourhood policing teams to tackle.
Over the last three months, our Wisbech team have carried out more than 40 hours of speed checks across the villages – 15 people were handed tickets, while 105 were given words of advice.
While we will be getting out to carry out speed checks whenever possible, you can help us.

Did you know you could volunteer as part of Community Speedwatch?

It is a national initiative where members of communities, with the support and supervision from their local police, record details of speeding vehicles using approved detection devices.
Registered keepers of vehicles breaking the speed limit are then contacted by letter, explaining the potential risks and consequences of their dangerous behaviour.

Repeat offender will receive a visit from our officers and could face criminal prosecution.

At the moment, we are scarce on volunteers to run schemes across the majority of Fenland, so are really on the hunt for more people to join us!
If this is something you are interested in – either joining an existing group near you, setting up a new group, or just finding out more about the scheme – please email speedwatch@cambs.police.uk or visit the Speedwatch information page on our website.

Someone Asked…?

Town hall meeting - WikipediaWhy doesn’t Whittlesey have ‘Town Hall’ meetings – mainly an ‘American Term
What is the purpose of townhall meetings?

The purpose of town hall meetings is for local and regional officials to hear the community’s views on public issues.

There have been no specific rules or guidelines for holding a town hall meeting. The format of the meetings can vary.

Way back in 2008/09, I was asked by the Police to organise meetings for them here in Whittlesey, every 3 months, so that the public could see and ask face-to face with our Police Force. Some 6 months later, I and my team had expanded it to include many other organisations. Unfortunately, I was not a Councillor at the time, and others took it over – it lasted leass that 2 meetings and was no more.

I have suggested to some that they may wish to start one again.?

Think Before You Call – Video By Cambs Police

Did you know that our Demand Hub takes an average of 500 calls to 999 and 1,000 calls to 101 per day?

With such demand being placed on our Call Handlers, we are asking the public to help us keep our phone lines free for genuine police matters and serious emergencies.

Our latest video allows you to take a step inside our bustling Demand Hub, where all 999 and 101 calls are taken, to better understand why we need you to Think Before You Call.

Watch the video here.

If you are ever unsure about whether to call us or not, you can always speak to a live web chat operator to ask for advice (just visit www.cambs.police.uk and click the green chat icon to start a chat).

You can also find a wealth of information on the Advice and Information pages on our website which you can take a look at before contacting us.

Ask the Police is also an official police resource that provides the answers to a wide variety of policing questions frequently asked by the general public.

Together we can help to keep our 101 and 999 phone lines free for those who need us most.

Apply for the Co-op Local Community Fund

Apply for the Co-op Local Community Fund

We support projects that help make communities fairer for everyone. You can apply if you’re a not-for profit group, wanting to fund a specific project that benefits your local community.

If your funding application is successful, we’ll work with you for 12 months. The more members that shop with Co-op and choose to support your project, the more funding you will receive.

To apply for funding, you need to send your application by 11 June 2023.

Check if you can apply for funding

The information in this section will help you to decide whether to apply for funding. We know that different people use different words for community work. For this application process,

the ‘group’ or ‘cause’ means your organisation the ‘project’ is the activity or specific work that you are applying to fund
You can apply if your project: brings people together to access food helps to improve people’s mental wellbeing creates opportunities for young people to be heard and make a difference helps people to save and restore nature or tackle climate change

Your project must also:

take place in the UK or Isle of Man take place or still be running after November 2024

To apply, your group needs to be: Registered or based in the UK
Have their own bank account
Operating in your local community
Not-for-profit

Groups that can apply include:

Churches or Chapels that are excepted charities (that means they do not need to register with the Charities Commission)
Co-operative societies
Community benefit societies
Community Interest Companies
Credit unions
Registered charities in the UK or Isle of Man
Social enterprises
Scout, Guide or Woodcraft Folk groups
Any other group that can prove that they are not-for-profit

We cannot fund projects that:

Support individuals
Support people or projects overseas
Promote any political activities or religious beliefs – but we can consider projects led by religious groups that are for the benefit of the whole community
Use all of the funds to cover staff salaries and running costs
Give our funding to other people or groups
Are the responsibility of local authorities
Could, in our opinion, harm the reputation of Co-op
