Do You Know Who’s At Your Door?

Do you know who’s knocking on your door?

We were called by concerned bank staff in Wisbech on Monday, who had a woman in his 70s come in asking to withdraw £7,500.

After bank staff spoke to her more, she confided that builders doing work opposite her home had knocked on her door and said she needed some work doing to her chimney.

They had quoted her £5,000 for the work, but while completing it had noticed other ‘problems’ including a crack on the roof – and increased the price of their work by £2,500.

The elderly woman said the builders would return to her home that afternoon to collect the cash, and confided in bank staff that she was frightened and the money was nearly all of her savings.

Officers took the woman home and tried to contact the builders to no avail, but advised the woman not to pay. An investigation has been launched with Action Fraud.

Thank you to the bank staff, who called us after noticing things weren’t right.

Remember – rogue traders often offer gardening work or maintenance services at attractive rates but the quality of work is substandard, unnecessary or overpriced.

They also use persuasive sales techniques to encourage you into making hasty decisions.

Doorstep selling is not illegal, but legitimate callers won’t mind if you ask them to come back later while you verify that they are genuine.

Ask them to leave their details and a quote and you can call them back once you’ve had time to decide whether you would like them to carry out the work. Also ask to see their ID.

More info and advice on fraud can be found on our dedicated web page.

WTC Makes Objections To Planning Application #1

Whittlesey Town Council, has made a formal complaint and objection to a Cambs CC Planning Application.

CCC/24/091/VAR | Importation, storage, processing including use of trommel, picking and recycling of incinerator bottom ash (IBA) and construction and demolition (C&D) waste, for exportation for use as incinerator bottom ash secondary aggregates (IBAA) Informative: S73 planning application to vary conditions 5 (Approved plans & documents); 6 (Hours of operation); 15 (Vehicle movements); 21 (Annual throughput of waste); and 25 (Stockpile heights) of planning permission CCC/21/024/FUL to increase: the quantity of waste imported to the site, number of HGV movements, stockpile heights and hours of operation within building 1; make changes to the layout of plant; and to crush and screen IBA/IBAA and C&D waste…..

I have been asked to email you by Whittlesey Town Council regarding information on the Environmental Statement 61621, section 1.5 Statement of Community Involvement.
Item 1.5.1 & 1.5.2
1.5.1 The Applicant presented the proposal to the established Whittlesey Liaison Committee on 2nd February 2024.
The attendees included local Saxongate representatives, the Environment Agency, Cambridgeshire County Council’s Planning Department Member, and a Whittlesey Planning Representative.
We wish to advise there was NO member of the Whittlesey Town Council Planning Committee at this meeting, therefore this information is factually incorrect and should be withdrawn or amended immediately.

The second item 1.5.2 Noting that the representatives were happy with the way the business operates on site with no noise, odour, dust or transport issues attributable to the operations, the main comments related to:
Increased wall height, Dust, Noise, Odour, Lorry Movements, Next Steps.
This indicates that the planning representative (as stated above) was happy with 1.5.2 and the associated points. Once again this is not the case as no one from the WTC Planning Committee was present.

The agent needs to amend this item immediately.

Some Senior Management and CEO’s of Health Service Providers along with
The Combined Authority Mayor Nick Johnson gave presentations.
There were a breakout group session(s)

Myself and Bob Wicks attended in our personal capacities.

The basic messages were ‘Transformation’.
The addressing issues of inequalities within the whole Health Service.
Access to services and of course the capacity of being able to see a doctor.

That said the message was and will be to carry on – In that there are now more people seeing a support health-workers because a direct doctors appointment may not be necessary and pharmacies are taking up some of the workload.

There was mention, of Health Centres (smaller ones) and Pharmacies closing being of concern.

4 years ago the then ‘Clinical Commissioning Group’ (CCG) was funded by £1 Billion for Cambs and Peterborough, today a new group ‘Intregated Care System/Boards’ are funded to £4 Billion –
