As the country recovers from its fifth heatwave so far this year, Anglian Water is asking its customers in Fenland to protect water supplies and precious local rivers by only using water for essential purposes.
The water company has warned that without cutting individual consumption as much as possible, there is a risk that customers’ supplies will be affected after a spring and summer of successive heatwaves and exceptionally dry conditions.
The flows in the Rivers Nar and Wissey, which Anglian Water relies on to keep taps flowing across Fenland as well as King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, are at an exceptionally low level – some of the lowest seen at this time of year since records began.
