Months of various roadworks, some good in maintaining terms, the rest may be necessary, however the word ‘Mayhem’ is an understatement. As Councillors we have little input into these works.
All the ‘Utilities‘ seem to be here at the same time along with our latest ‘friends’ –
City Cable/Contractors, who I spoke with one foreman yesterday, and asked ‘how long they plan to be digging in Whittlesey’ – he rolled his eyes and said well we’ve been in Leicester several years…..
Message received from Cllr Laws….
Delph Road Closure 230818Just received confirmation from TMC (Traffic Management Team) 3 x Whittlesey Highway Electronic Information Boards are set until 8th September 2023 and advises roadworks at East Delph (B1040) and single lane traffic only.
Have been advised Cadent Gas Contractors have set out cones/single line traffic signs today and do not appear to be working at East Delph (B1040) adjacent to Delph Garage & opposite Hemmerley Drive.
At the moment many drivers are ignoring the single lane traffic cones/signs and not waiting or giving way. Several are trying to turn in the entrance of Hemmerley Drive holding up the flow of traffic.
P J Thory’s transport office has called to say their drivers have reported avoiding cars not giving way, not waiting and vehicles attempting ‘U’ turns at East Delph. Also Delph Garage customers trying to enter the flow of traffic.
I’ve just noticed a substantial increase of unfamiliar vehicles using West Delph and HGV’s when reaching the track leading to Morton’s Leam forced to reverse and use Yarwell Headlands ‘T’ junction for turning and returning to the B1040.
I can only assume non-local drivers think West Delph is an alternative route to the Dog-in-a-Doublet.
I have been assured CCC Street Works Manager is on his way to visit East Delph & discuss with Cadent Contractors to ensure the appropriate signage is in place for 3 weeks of temporary works. Apparently, they cannot install temporary traffic lights owing to the works being in such close proximity to The Morton Fork 4-way traffic light cross road.
CCC said the only other option is for a complete road closure between Morton Fork crossroad and South of the Dog-in-a-Doublet.
My suggestion is Cadent Contractors employ/assign a work team to use manual stop/go signs during working hours and take the cones/barriers back to a safe distance allowing two-way traffic at night & weekends. I’m waiting for a response to my suggestion and a call back from CCC Street Works Manager.
At the moment CCC Highways consider drivers will act responsibility and appropriately – in my opinion that isn’t going to happen !
