Fenland Burglars Led Us To 170K Cannabis Factory
A burglar and his accomplice who led us to a £170,000 cannabis factory in Fenland last year (2020) have been sentenced.
A phone call from a member of the public about a suspected burglary in process led to the arrest of Luigi Di Caprio, 21, and James Law, 22, and the discovery of a cannabis factory of 355 plants spanning 11 rooms.
Our officers were deployed to Churchill Road in Wisbech after the call came in at about 1.40am on 23 August.
They arrived to find Di Caprio and Law running from the house with what was believed to be cannabis plants. After a short foot chase, both men were arrested on suspicion of burglary.
Di Caprio, of no fixed address, was charged with burglary including theft of cannabis, as well as a second burglary of a home in Kings Delph, Whittlesey, in March last year where jewellery, clothing, tools and an Xbox One were stolen.
He admitted the Whittlesey burglary and was sentenced to six months in prison on 27 May this year, as well as being made to pay more than £700 in fines and costs.
He initially denied the Wisbech burglary but changed his plea on the first day of trial in June. Yesterday (Thursday), he appeared at Peterborough Crown Court where he was given a 12-month community order and must complete a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement.
Law, also of no fixed address, was charged with multiple offences and was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison in October last year.
DC Tessa Munro, from the Acquisitive Crime Team, said: “Thanks to information received by a member of the public we were able to catch Di Caprio and Law in the act. I would strongly urge people to report any suspicions to us as they are the eyes and ears of our communities when we can’t be everywhere.”

| During the last week our officers across the county arrested 22 people and seized drugs, cash and weapons as part of a crack down on county lines drug dealing and exploitation.
The national intensification week took place between 11 and 18 October and saw our officers execute 12 warrants and intercept vehicles potentially involved in county lines activity. As a result of investigations, five of those arrested went on to be charged. Class A drugs including crack cocaine and heroin were seized as well as cannabis, cash and mobile phones. Weapons including knives and a taser torch were also seized. A number of potential cuckooed addresses, where drug dealers take over the home of a vulnerable person in order to use it as a base for dealing, were also visited. Throughout the week we also spoke with hotel, bank, taxi and bus staff about spotting the signs of people being exploited by county lines. Our neighbourhood officers also held talks at local schools to discuss the issue with young people. County lines is not just people dealing drugs across counties. It brings violence, exploitation and anti-social behaviour to our communities. Intelligence and information from our communities has been integral in the success of this week of action and we can reassure you this is not just a one off. | An investigation into the murder of a man who was stabbed in a Cambridgeshire suburb will be the focus of the latest episode of 24 Hours in Police Custody.
Viewers of the popular Channel 4 programme on Monday (25 October) will follow detectives as they launch a manhunt for Robert Parkins who left his victim bleeding to death in the street. Parkins, 34, of Darrington Close, Eaton Socon, was sentenced to 19 years in prison at The Old Bailey in August last year (2020) after being found guilty of the murder of Alex Fitzpatrick. Alex had gone to Prince Close, Eaton Socon, on 13 October 2019 to drop off his son’s glasses when he got into a disagreement with his estranged partner. Parkins then came out holding a kitchen knife and after a scuffle stabbed Alex 15 times in the chest, lungs and back area before fleeing the scene. Detective Superintendent Michael Branston, who led the investigation, said: “This was a brutal, frenzied and sustained attack resulting in the death of a man whose son will now grow up without his father in his life. “What started out as a dispute escalated to such a degree that Alex lost his life from misuse of a knife. “The vast majority of people don’t carry knives and are never affected by knife crime, however, this show highlights the devastating impact of incidents involving knives which will stay with those around them for the rest of their lives.” 24 Hours in Police Custody: Murder on the Doorstep will be shown on Channel 4 at 9pm on Monday (25 October). |
The Whittlesey ‘Buttercross’ suffered some minor damage to the tiling/roofing recently and has been fenced off for safety reasons.The ‘Buttercross’ is classified as an ancient monument and as such any repairs has to carried out under conditions.
Ottomans Take-away/Broad Street, which suffered major fire some moths ago and has been fenced off causing some considerable inconvienience to both traffic and pedestrians.
There has I understand been issues surrounding ‘Insurance’, however this week there has been some activity in/around the building. Traffic lights remain in place.
Old ‘Nat West’ Building/Market Street, also has arris fencing around it – again has roffing issues.
It has been in this state for a number of years and I am aware that Fenland District Council have been on the case.
I inderstand that communicating with the owner (who lives abroad) is somewhat ‘challenging’ – the only other way is for FDC to pay for the repairs in the ‘hope’ to recover the costs.

Pages 1 – 31 provide an executive summary then the rest of the report unwinds.
Mayor Nik Johnson supports this report, but he also needs to get the other members to support it.
You may be aware that the two abstentions in March received ‘some flack’ from residents who felt their views were not being represented.
The lone vote against was Cllr Boden.
