Dear Councillors,

We are writing to provide a brief update regarding Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

We have informed by Government this morning that there will not be an announcement about LGR in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough today.
We were expecting to receive details of the geographic footprints for the new unitary councils. But this announcement by Government has been delayed.
The Government have told us that they aim to make a decision by October.

At this stage, we are awaiting an explanation as to why the announcement has been delayed and will share further information as soon as we receive it.

What is Local Government Reorganisation?

In December 2024, the government set out plans to abolish all ‘two-tier’ council areas in England.

That means that these councils in Cambridgeshire will be replaced by several unitary authorities from April 2028:

  • Cambridge City Council
  • Cambridgeshire County Council
  • East Cambridgeshire District Council
  • Fenland District Council
  • Huntingdonshire District Council
  • Peterborough City Council
  • South Cambridgeshire District Council

Option ‘D’ was being banded about last week….

Then a ‘rumour’ that Whittlesey may be split away from Fenland get
get placed within Peterborough Unitary Authority…
