Unfortunately, the decision has been taken to defer the Bower Footbridge replacement works until the next navigational closure window (from October 2026 onwards). This decision has been made due to a lack of sufficient confidence that the current programme would allow all works to be completed within the existing navigational closure period. To eliminate associated risks, it has therefore been deemed necessary to delay the works. Please be assured that the existing footbridge will continue to be closely monitored throughout this period to ensure public safety is maintained.
Notwithstanding navigational consent, I have instructed MGroup (CCC’s framework contractor) to ensure that all third-party activities are appropriately formalised, and that the new structure is manufactured and stored to mitigate current risks. I would be extremely disappointed if works do not commence in October 2026.
