Spades are finally in the ground on a new environmentally friendly 175-home development on the outskirts of a Fenland town.

Violet Meadows is being built by Allison Homes on a 20-acre plot off Drybread Road in Whittlesey and will feature a selection of one-to four-bedroom houses and bungalows.

Each home will be electrically heated, have solar panels on its roof, and electric vehicle charging points as standard.

George Wilkinson, senior planner at Peterborough-based Allison Homes East, said: “We are incredibly proud to have received reserved matters approval for our Violet Meadows development, and are now ready to commence construction work and continue our commitment to Whittlesey.

“This development will provide much needed, sustainable new homes built to the highest standards, and bring a host of environmental and economic benefits to the area.

“We’d like to thank Fenland District Council and Whittlesey Town Council for their positive engagement throughout the outline and reserved matters planning applications, leading to this high-quality extension of Whittlesey.”

Part of the build’s agreement will see the developers increase the site’s biodiversity by 13%, including a new community orchard and three-and-a-half hectares of open space.

A spokesperson for the company also confirmed there would be a minimum of 35 ‘affordable’ homes on the estate.
