For some considerable time, when-ever there has been national/historical events taking place, many parts of the country would light a ‘Beacon’ became symbols of celebration and national unity.
Beacon lighting events marked significant national occasions, such as royal jubilees, coronations, and military victories.
However we never had one in Whittlesey – again many local groups have been campaigning for one. It is my understanding that the Royal British Legion raised funds for this one that has just been installed at the Manor Field.
I know there have been meetings at Fenland District Council as to the location.
However I have had more than one person contact me – asking the purpose and use of the Beacon?
I am unaware that there have been any costs to the ratepayer.
