Proposed Mega Incinderator For Wisbech

The proposed Mega Incinerator planned for Wisbech would be a “catastrophe” for the town, campaigners have said.
Why would this affect us in Whittlesey.

1/ There would be a good possibility that any waste (IBA – Incinerator Bottom Ash) would be processed at facilities already running from the Saxon Pit area.

2/ A vast increase in our already overloaded HGV’s passing along the A605, resulting in more pollutants and carbon.

Fenland District Council says it will not allow the developer behind the planned mega-incinerator for Wisbech access across land it owns.

The district council has been one of the leading opponents of MVV Environment Ltd’s plans for the 54-megawatt burner on a site off Algores Way.

Now the authority has reiterated to the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, that it will not voluntarily allow ‘a right of access over Algores Way’ which is needed by the applicant behind the Medworth Scheme to build the incinerator.

A decision on the Wisbech incinerator is due by the middle of next month.A decision from the Secretary of State is due by Wednesday, February 21st.
In a statement issued this week the council said: “Fenland District Council has maintained its strong objection to the proposed Wisbech incinerator after the Secretary of State deciding the plan asked for an updated position on a specific aspect.”

In its reply, the council said: “Fenland District Council maintains its strong objection in principle to the proposed Medworth Scheme which reflects the significant concerns of the local community.

The council has been asked to update on its position regarding ‘a right of access over Algores Way,’ which is required by the applicant to carry out the plan.

“The council will not voluntarily give Temporary Possession Rights to the applicant given the council’s objection in principle to the development.

“The applicant is fully aware of this and hence the applicant has not made an approach to reach an agreement.”

RG Note : I strongly support the Wisbech Town Council, the residents group Wisbech Without Incineration (WisWIN)  and FDC in their objections to this proposal.

Explained Again How Flood Warning System Works.

I and many feel frustrated to be told that there is no longer a flood risk in effect, to find that the barriers are still in place –
there are reasons for this.

1/ The Envonment Agency issues warning.

2/ Peterborough City Council are responsible for the North Bank from Dog-In-A Doublet to The Whistling Bridge.

3/ Cambridgeshire CC Highways are responsible for the B1040 between Whittlesey and Dog In A Doublet.

The EA issues that there no longer a flood warning – this is sent to all parties/public registered and councils.

The roads remain closed until they have been safey checked and all debis/rubbish is removed this could take anything between an hour to 4/5 hours depends on what needs to cleared up, the gates remain closed until Cambs Highways or Peterborough CC allow the gates to be opened.

The ‘people’ responsible for cutting the chains/locks, damaging the gates are potentially putting others at risk. One day they maybe caught.

Patience please….

Well Blow Me Down With A…..? – Weed Control

What was supposed to be a cost cuttung exercise – will now in fact cost us more…
They didn’t save what they thought they would, and actually increased their Carbon Footprint…..

We didn’t get this right’ admits county council over policy to end chemical weed killing.

At a meeting on Tuesday, council officers apologised for the way the policy change was handled and admitted the county council did not engage effectively with other councils and people in the county.

Chemical weed killing is due to start again across Fenland and the rest of the county after Cambridgeshire County Council admitted it had ‘not got it right’ on its policy.

The authority stopped using chemical weed killers last year, instead planning to only physically remove weeds if they “presented a hazard or nuisance” to people.

The county council said at the time of the change that it would save the authority £120,000 a year, would reduce its carbon footprint, and would reduce the use of “potentially harmful chemicals”.

New Bus Stop Posters Warn of Emerging Sscam

The force has launched a campaign warning the public about the dangers of an emerging scam.

It works through QR – quick response – codes and can see victims unwittingly download malware or provide fraudsters with sensitive information.

In some cases victims have lost thousands. One victim lost £13,000 after scanning a code on a station parking machine, which took her to a phony website.

Posters have been put up at bus stops in Cambridge in a bid to spread the word about the threat.

The posters show someone scanning a QR code on a menu – just one of the many places QR codes can be found – with the words, “Never been quished? Let’s keep it that way”, written across them.

The posters encourage people to scan a code, which will take them to a dedicated force webpage, packed with messages on how to stay safe from this latest scam. It also highlights how quick and easy it is to scan a code.

Fraud and cyber prevention officer Dave York said: “Quishing, also known as QR code phishing, involves tricking someone into scanning a phony QR code with their phone or device. The QR code then takes the user to a fraudulent website that might download malware or ask for sensitive information. It’s the latest trend used by scammers to get to your hard-earned cash.

“QR codes are often found on things like parking machines, charging points, emails, even restaurant menus. Once scanned, scam codes will take you to a bogus website where you innocently input your details thinking you’re paying for a service or visiting the genuine site, when in fact, you’re sharing all your personal details with the scammers.

There are a number of things people can do to keep themselves safe, including:

–  If the QR is on a poster in a public area, always check whether it appears to have been stuck over the original. If the sign or notice is laminated and the QR code is under the lamination or part of the original print, chances are it’s more likely to be genuine
–  If in doubt download the app from the official Google or Apple store or search the website on your phone’s internet browser, rather than scanning a QR code to take you there. It may take longer, but it’s more secure

– Check the preview of the QR code’s URL before opening it to see if it appears legitimate. Make sure the website uses HTTPS rather than HTTP, doesn’t have obvious misspellings and has a trusted domain

–  Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t seem right, don’t share your details

“It’s hoped the posters, coupled with the webpage, will highlight the potential risks around scanning QR codes, what to look out for and how to keep yourself safe from the scammers. “Technological advances bring a whole host of benefits, but sadly also a whole host of opportunities for scammers.”

Flood Warning: B1040 Thorney To Whittlesey Road To The South Of The River Nene

To close the B1040 between East Delph & the Dog-on-a-Doulet owing to the next storm moving in to our area.

Predicting winds between 40 – 50 mph, heavy rainfalls until the end of this week and flooding expected.

Environment Agency and CCC Emergency Highways team are fully aware B1040 flood gates are damaged and require repairs, therefore alternative road blocks are being considered – all thanks to irresponsible drivers continually cutting through chains/padlocks,  taking both gates off their hinges and damaging the support structures.

RIP Sir Graham Bright

Sir Graham Bright was the first elected Police & Crime Commisioner for Cambridgeshire.
He sadly paased away on the 19th January.
I met Sir Graham on several occasions and found him very open and transparent.

He set the bar for future PCC’s none of whom I would say have reached that bar (yet).
His political career which spanned over 50 years, from his time as a councillor to being a member of parliament and subsequently police and crime commissioner between 2012 and 2016, I found that he welcomed everyones input and sought to encourage debate.
RIP
