Pharmacist Stole Drugs From Employer

A Peterborough dispenser who stole thousands of sleeping tablets from his employer has been sentenced.

Between September and December 2021, Khurram Abbas, 30, was found to have placed orders for 110 boxes (3,080 tablets) of temazepam – a form of sleeping tablet and class C prescription only drug – from City Pharmacy in Lincoln Road, Millfield.
A senior member of staff received an email from a supplier about an order and became suspicious due to scams directed at pharmacies, but it was confirmed the orders had been placed over the phone.

An internal investigation by the pharmacy identified Abbas as being responsible for placing the orders and he was suspended from the company.
On 17 December 2021 he was questioned as to why he had placed such large orders and where the stock was as it could not be accounted for.

Initially claiming it was simply a mistake, further evidence was put to Abbas who then admitted ordering and stealing the drug over three months, resulting in his dismissal from the company and the matter being reported to police.
He was arrested at his new place of work – another pharmacy – on 3 March last year and a subsequent search of his home uncovered £2,230 in cash.

Abbas, of Cambridge Avenue, Millfield, appeared at Peterborough Crown Court today (26 January) where he was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for 18 months, ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £1500 in court costs, after previously pleading guilty to theft by employee.
He denied a charge of being concerned in the supply of class C drugs – namely temazepam, which will lie on file.

Detective Constable Kevin Poole, who investigated, said: “Temazepam is a class C drug and a prescription only medicine which can therefore only be legally prescribed or supplied by a registered practitioner via a pharmacy.
“This was a sophisticated offence where Abbas abused a level of trust by his employer, using his position as a pharmacist to place large orders of the drug and steal them.”

Pavement Parking Crackdown Begins in Edinburgh

With Civil Parking Enforcement some way away – years maybe, for Whittlesey/Fenland.
We still have to reply on our Neighbourhood Police Team to carry this task out, when they could be deployed doing better tasks.

Motorists in Edinburgh face a £100 fine for parking on pavements from Monday, as the city council becomes the first in Scotland to implement the ban.
Some are not happy…..as would be expected?

“They have not consulted us or come up with signs or double yellow lines on one side of the road.

“They have just slapped this ban on without giving us any suggestions and left us in a bun fight. It is very heavy-handed, ill-thought-out and very irresponsible.”

Official Opening of Manea Railway Car Park

Some commentators have said a waste of money, others say a leap for the future.
Each of Fenlands Market Towns were ‘allocated’ £1M each for improvements to their town, this funding from The Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, came about under the watch of the previous Mayor Palmer.

March for instance have spent most of their money on enhancing the Town Centre.
Whittlesey, completed the much loved Herritage Walk, which credit to Cllr Dee Laws pushed forward, along with some improvements to the Manor Area, the yet safety upgrade to the Block Paving on the Market Place, and the hibernated Heritage Centre, which to date has not happened.

Proposed Mega Incinderator For Wisbech

The proposed Mega Incinerator planned for Wisbech would be a “catastrophe” for the town, campaigners have said.
Why would this affect us in Whittlesey.

1/ There would be a good possibility that any waste (IBA – Incinerator Bottom Ash) would be processed at facilities already running from the Saxon Pit area.

2/ A vast increase in our already overloaded HGV’s passing along the A605, resulting in more pollutants and carbon.

Fenland District Council says it will not allow the developer behind the planned mega-incinerator for Wisbech access across land it owns.

The district council has been one of the leading opponents of MVV Environment Ltd’s plans for the 54-megawatt burner on a site off Algores Way.

Now the authority has reiterated to the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, that it will not voluntarily allow ‘a right of access over Algores Way’ which is needed by the applicant behind the Medworth Scheme to build the incinerator.

A decision on the Wisbech incinerator is due by the middle of next month.A decision from the Secretary of State is due by Wednesday, February 21st.
In a statement issued this week the council said: “Fenland District Council has maintained its strong objection to the proposed Wisbech incinerator after the Secretary of State deciding the plan asked for an updated position on a specific aspect.”

In its reply, the council said: “Fenland District Council maintains its strong objection in principle to the proposed Medworth Scheme which reflects the significant concerns of the local community.

The council has been asked to update on its position regarding ‘a right of access over Algores Way,’ which is required by the applicant to carry out the plan.

“The council will not voluntarily give Temporary Possession Rights to the applicant given the council’s objection in principle to the development.

“The applicant is fully aware of this and hence the applicant has not made an approach to reach an agreement.”

RG Note : I strongly support the Wisbech Town Council, the residents group Wisbech Without Incineration (WisWIN)  and FDC in their objections to this proposal.
