The Final Countdown KD Rail Crosssing

It is my understanding that after the 19th October the ‘Old’ Kings Dyke Railway Crossing will no longer be able to be used in an emergency.

A new multi-billion £ signalling system is being rolled out and the latest being for the East Coast Line.
Although it will not be fully operational until sometime next year – there will be no going back once the system starts going live. KD Crossing will be history and no more.

Of course as you may guess I do have a solution….

Update – 70th Anniversary of The Official Opening of SHS

On Monday morning I will be doing an interview with Fenland Youth Radio just after
9am about The Sir Harry Smith School…

https://www.fenlandyouthradio.com/

or download ‘App’ (Search Fenland Youth Radio)

When this date (07th October) flagged up on my computer it was far too late to organise anything formal. I have been in contact with SHS – but again they have limited resources to organise anything…..

Lots of history and nostalgia to what must be thousands who have attended over the last 70 years..

My own group who arrived in 1963 have had 3 wonderful reunions which I helped to organise. School days were not happy for everyone I appreciate, but for most it was.
Just very unfortunate there was not enough time to organise anything.
There are a number of residents who still live locally – attended on that opening day.
07th October 1954.

Update – My Apologies – Council Surgery Yesterday.

I forgot to post up this event, however I’ve been informed it was a busy surgery with Clls Mockett and Laws attending, a couple of residents have let me know, that had they had been aware of Cllr Laws attending they would have gone along themselves.
I’m sure you are aware that Cllr Laws like myself can be contacted and approached about most issues and concerns and we will try and help.

Present road issues are challenging us all – not all the facts are in the public domain,
social media keyboard warriors are NOT helping, although I/we appreciate everyones frustrations.
There are several Councillors on the case…

Cambs NHW AGM

Yesterday Robin Sutton and myself attended the AGM of Cambridgeshire Neighbourhood Watch at Police HQ in Huntingdon.
Robin who has been chair of the group for 6 years will be retiring at the next Executive meeting.

Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) represents the largest group of volunteer organisations in the UK with 155,000 schemes covering 10million people.

There is a vast amount of information on the Whittlesey NHW Website.

Do You Know Who’s At Your Door?

Do you know who’s knocking on your door?

We were called by concerned bank staff in Wisbech on Monday, who had a woman in his 70s come in asking to withdraw £7,500.

After bank staff spoke to her more, she confided that builders doing work opposite her home had knocked on her door and said she needed some work doing to her chimney.

They had quoted her £5,000 for the work, but while completing it had noticed other ‘problems’ including a crack on the roof – and increased the price of their work by £2,500.

The elderly woman said the builders would return to her home that afternoon to collect the cash, and confided in bank staff that she was frightened and the money was nearly all of her savings.

Officers took the woman home and tried to contact the builders to no avail, but advised the woman not to pay. An investigation has been launched with Action Fraud.

Thank you to the bank staff, who called us after noticing things weren’t right.

Remember – rogue traders often offer gardening work or maintenance services at attractive rates but the quality of work is substandard, unnecessary or overpriced.

They also use persuasive sales techniques to encourage you into making hasty decisions.

Doorstep selling is not illegal, but legitimate callers won’t mind if you ask them to come back later while you verify that they are genuine.

Ask them to leave their details and a quote and you can call them back once you’ve had time to decide whether you would like them to carry out the work. Also ask to see their ID.

More info and advice on fraud can be found on our dedicated web page.
