Cambs NHW Executive Committee Meeting

Managed to attend this evening, as always clashes with other local meetings.
Interesting tonight in respect of Peterborough introducing an ‘ATM’ watch scheme,
this is to try and minimise the issues surrounding both successful and attempted ATM robberies.
A long debate about duplication of NHW remit took place.

Neighbourhood Police News

Our neighbourhood officers have been out in full force, combatting shoplifting and supporting businesses across the county during Safer Business Action Week.

Initiated by the National Business Crime Centre (NBCC), the week of action aimed to bring police and partner agencies together to support businesses and reduce business crime across the country.

Here’s a snapshot of the week’s activity:

  • 280 hours engaging with businesses across Cambridgeshire, offering crucial advice on safeguarding their establishments
  • 331 hours of patrols in key areas including around market stalls, shops, post offices, libraries, banks, building sites, trades businesses and pubs
  • 25 arrests for business-related crime including shoplifting and business burglary. Among these, there were 69 individual charges with 45 specifically related to shoplifting
  • 100 Selecta DNA marking kits handed out to tradespeople, each capable of marking 50 tools, provided by the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Safer Communities fund
  • Cybercrime information events for businesses at Huntingdon Library, Barclays Bank in St Neots, and Caring Together Charity in Girton

While Safer Business Action Week serves as a focused event to raise awareness and target business-related crimes, it does not stop there. We continue to work with partners across the county to combat crime and anti-social behaviour affecting the business community.

It Has Taken A Long Time – But Got There In The End

I have actively been campaigning for these enhancements for some 15 months and at times has been somewhat ‘challenging’ but as I’ve said on many occasions – sometimes we get the result.

Annual Tweetathon for Control Room Week

This week is #ControlRoomWeek, a national event which aims to show the important work of control room staff all over the country.
If you have ever wondered what a typical Friday night looks like for a Cambridgeshire Constabulary emergency call handler, you’re in luck.

In order to demonstrate the reality of the demand our call handlers face, we will be taking to Twitter this Friday (27 October) between 4pm-11pm where we will be live Tweeting about every 999 call we receive.

This will be our fourth annual Tweetathon after great successes in previous years. Last year saw Twitter users commenting that the event provided a “great insight into the real-life workload you handle”, while another said it “shines a light on the amount and variety of calls and issues you collectively have to deal with. Utterly engrossing seeing the tweets pop up!”

Detective Superintendent Michael Branston, head of demand, said “Friday nights are usually busy, and I fully expect our social media followers to be surprised by the volume but also really interested in the different types of demand we deal with each day.”

Make sure you follow us on Twitter – @CambsCops and tune in between 4pm-11pm on Friday to learn about the volume and variety of calls we receive on a daily basis.
