Deaths due to COVID-19 have been much lower in recent months than earlier in the pandemic. However, while we can use deaths from flu and pneumonia to put COVID-19 into context, we cannot say for certain whether the two conditions are behaving, or will behave, in similar ways in the future.
Between 13 March 2020 and 1 April 2022, COVID-19 was identified as the underlying cause of death in four times as many deaths as flu and pneumonia.
COVID-19 also has a different impact across age groups, with the average age of death for COVID-19 lower than for deaths due to flu and pneumonia throughout the pandemic.

But they are just the first brushstrokes of the detailed picture of the nation we will paint over coming months and years, a picture which will get richer and more detailed as we go. Here Jen Woolford explains what you can expect from the first results and how we have reached this stage.
