More Planning Complexities. Remember – Supermarketgate!

Without prejudice.

At my first meeting as a member of FDC’s Planning Committee (26¦07¦23), an  application by Aldi for a store off Hostmoor Avenue March (opposite Tesco).

The application was approved.

(Does this sound familiar/ supermarketgate in Whittlesey).

New budget supermarket for March could be delayed following news that a rival brand has launched a legal challenge against it.
Planning permission was granted to Aldi to build a new store on Hostmoor Avenue in July last year, despite objections from rival Tesco to the proposal.

At that time councillors decided “shoppers would decide with their feet” once the store was up and running to determine whether or not it was wanted.

In December Aldi announced it was hoping to have the store open in March this year and with it the creation of up to 50 jobs.

Some 10 years ago a battle of supermarkets (Sainburys & Tesco) in Whittlesey, known as Supermarketgate carried on for some considerable time – ALL covered here on the web-blog if you remember.

In the end neither Sainsbury’s or Tesco fulfilled their promise, one claiming ‘market forces had changed. It was Aldi who eventually built and opened 2023

I copy the text from one of my posts – April 2015 Tesco to Gift £10,000

At last nights town council meeting, it was unanimous by all who attended that this ‘gift’ from Tesco to both Chatteris and Whittlesey for the inconvenience caused by their planning applications (Sweetener by anyone else’s language), be administered by the town council itself.
The Cambs Times tried to involve in moderating the granting/allocation of would be applicants. I and I dare say the majority of Whittlesey electorate hope that this ‘Gifted Money’ is treated by the Finance & Policy committee of WTC like any other requests for money.
Many organisations within Whittlesey are looked after by WTC in small grants, providing they make a case for such support, this money should be treated no differently.

These are the facts – how people interpret is up to them..!
