A prolific waste criminal has been ordered to hand over more than £1.4 million for illegally dumping more than 4,000 tonnes of waste across England – including at a farm in Peterborough.
A nationwide investigation by the Environment Agency uncovered a network of 16 illegal dumping sites, stretching from the South East to the North West.
Places the waste was dumped included Yaxley, Farcet and Thorney, a manor house at Ewhurst in Surrey, and at a warehouse at Margate in Kent.
Varun Datta, 36, of Little Chester Street, in Belgravia, London must now pay £1.1 million, reflecting the financial benefit from his crimes, plus £100,000 in compensation and £200,000 in prosecution costs. He was also hit with a prison sentence of four months, suspended for 18 months, as well as 30 days’ rehabilitation and 200 hours of unpaid work.
The case, heard at Birmingham crown court, also saw two others prosecuted.
Mohammed Saraji Bashir, 45, of Windmill Street, Peterborough, also got a four-month suspended prison sentence, unpaid work and period of rehabilitation, while Robert William McAllister, 55, of Iveagh Close, Northwood, London, was fined £750. Warrants for the arrest of two other men are still active.
Two more waste criminals, David Weeks and Lee Brookes, were given suspended prison sentences last year for the waste stored illegally at a rat-infested industrial unit in Margate.

Some may remember – Whittlesey was ‘promised’ a Country Park by more than one developer – did it happen – NO….(not for the want of trying)….
I have for a long period, in the background supported the campaign for Turves – Three Horseshoes to progress into getting a community hub/centre.
I was in contact with the Ex-Chair Stephen Goldspink, and am still on the groups -mailing list.
It is not in my Council Ward area, and we in Whittlesey South have enough of our owns issues.
More than happy as always to promote their cause.
However one must ask – Fundraising progress appears modest, with the official JustGiving appeal for example, showing just two supporters donating £35 toward a £200,000 target.

From Cllr Barry Wainwright….
I have been exchanging emails with highways over this one for the past week or so,
This is the latest update I have had from them today:
Good Morning Barry,
In an attempt to speed up the pothole repairs planning, a Permit Officer from the Streetworks Team and I will be assisting M Group starting next Tuesday for a couple of days a week for the foreseeable future.
I will have a look for this one on Tuesday to see if we can get it moved on.

Dear Roy,
It was an early start for our rural and neighbourhood officers on Monday as they carried out a warrant in Crease Bank, Whittlesey.
🌱A cannabis factory consisting of 270 plants was uncovered.
A man in his 70s was arrested and has since been bailed while investigations continue.
Cannabis factories can be an extremely dangerous fire risk, especially if the electricity has been bypassed.
Do you know the signs that you may be living or working next to a cannabis factory?
🏠Lots of different people coming and going from the address at all times of the day and night
👃Strange smells coming from the property
🪟Windows covered or curtains closed all the time
You can find out more, including advice on how to report, here.
The warrant was part of the team’s priority work to tackle drug dealing and drug use.
You can find out more about the work we have been doing on our website.

I wanted to share the recent update published yesterday on our website regarding the remedial works at King’s Dyke – King’s Dyke remedial works continue | Cambridgeshire County Council
Update 18 February:
Plans remain on track to re-open the road fully by the end of February. Work continues on the final layer of sprayed concrete, focused on the top of the embankment to allow traffic management to be removed as planned on 28 February.
Once the road is reopened, Jones Bros will continue working lower down the embankment to complete the remaining remedial work.
Following completion of the remedial work, there will be a period of settlement before the road is fully resurfaced later this year.

Organised by Fenland Radio in conjunction with Whittlesey Sports Association, It’s a Knockout is being held in the town on August 16.
Organisers are hoping that teams from towns and villages across Fenland will sign up to join the fun, which will include a host of challenges and games reminiscent of the hit BBC show, which ran for over two decades from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Teams are of 10 players, and contestants must be aged 16 or over – it will cost £50 per person to enter (£500 per team).
Robert has commissioned Knockout Challenge Ltd to provide the games for the day, and they will include dressing in costumes, water fun, and foam, and will basically be ike a school sports day for adults.
Although the initial hope is to get at least 12 teams to sign up, Robert said the more teams the better, and the event could be expanded accordingly.

WTC Planning Notes Monday 16th February 2026
Ghosters@WTC-Planning.
Peterborough is different to Fenland – it is a city with a diverse population, its politics change from election to election, both at national and local levels.
That said, I dare say many Fenland Councillors will be watching with interest, as I will also.
My plans are not yet decided, I would very much like to carry on my ‘Community Work’.
Deliver small but significant projects each election
(Picnic Benches, Fishing Platforms and The Platinum Wood Project) –
However age and health come into play – wait and see….
‘Who upsets me’ may make me change my intentions?
