KDNR BioBlitz – Postponed Due To Wet Weather Forecast

Due to the current weather forecast for this weekend (wet!), we have unfortunately taken the decision to postpone the official BioBlitz event until later in the summer.
If you still wish to visit the reserve, please feel free to do so and we will welcome your species records.

The official event’s new details will be uploaded as soon as we can schedule in an alternative.
Many thanks for your support and apologies for any inconvenience caused.

The Story of The Man Waiting For a Bus

Most people would be forgiven for taking just one quick glance at an elderly man waiting for a bus.

But thanks to one passerby in Soham, who saw the same man again a few hours later, extra steps have now been taken to safeguard him.

The kind woman initially noticed the man walking towards Ely earlier that same day, and then near the station a few hours later – looking very confused and disorientated.

The woman spoke to him, and the man in his 80s showed her his bus pass and said he was going to see someone but couldn’t remember who.

He had no bag and declined a lift home from the woman, who then called us just after 3pm last Thursday.

We spoke to the man’s family and checks revealed he had dementia. We put further safeguarding measures in place, including the Herbert Protocol.

Do you know about the Herbert Protocol? It’s a scheme we support that can help find people with dementia should they go missing from home.

It encourages family and friends to keep a document that will help officers in the event a loved one goes missing by collating key pieces of information such as a physical description, familiar places, health details and an up-to-date photo.

Carers, family or friends of a vulnerable person, or the person themselves, can fill in a Herbert Protocol form in advance, containing information to help the police if the person goes missing.

Keeping a completed form means you don’t have to try to remember the information when you are under stress if someone goes missing. And it saves time, so we can start the search sooner.

For more information or to download a Herbert Protocol form, visit
our dedicated web page.

Listen In To Real Hoax Calls

Listen in to real hoax calls we receive from children across Cambridgeshire.

This is a message to parents and carers ahead of the school summer holidays. As per our previous eCops message, when children break up from school for summer,
we often see an increase in hoax calls from children who are bored and unsupervised.

In order to show the type of hoax / prank calls our 999 operators receive from young people, we have shared just a few real recordings of prank calls into Cambridgeshire Police.

We ask that you watch this video to better understand why it is so important that we educate the young people in our lives about hoax calling, why it is never acceptable, and the impact that it can have on others.
Please remind your children that we treat hoax calls very seriously as they can cost lives and are a huge waste of valuable resources. Not only that, but it is an offence to make a malicious or hoax call to the emergency services. Those prosecuted could face a hefty fine or up to six months in prison.
Help us to keep your children safe this summer.

Construction Site Visits Combat Modern Slavery

Last week our officers visited construction sites in the county as part of ongoing efforts to combat modern slavery.

The action follows a national increase in the number of modern slavery cases being identified within the construction industry.

On this occasion no victims were identified, but officers were still able to offer advice to workers and site managers.

The vast majority of businesses are legitimate, but some exploit workers with poor working conditions and pay well below the minimum wage.

If you’re employed in the industry, or you’re getting construction work completed on your home, please be aware of the signs and report any concerns.

You can find more information about last week’s action and the signs to look out for on the news section of our website.

Kind regards,
Tim Goddard
Communications officer
