Today we published figures for deaths involving COVID-19 in England and Wales. The main points include:

  • One in four deaths in the week ending 25 December involved COVID-19
  • There were 2,912 deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19) in England and Wales in the week ending 25 December 2020 – a decrease of 74 deaths compared with the previous week.
  • However, delays because of the Christmas Day Bank Holiday contributed to a decline in overall registrations. As a proportion of all deaths in the most recent week, COVID-19 made up 25.3% of the total, the highest since mid-May 2020.
  • Despite the impact of Christmas Day on registrations, London, the East of England and the North East of England all saw the number of COVID-19 deaths rise compared with the previous week. Wales also reported an increase.
  • Deaths from all causes remained higher than normal for this time of year, with hospitals, care homes and private homes all recording figures in excess of the five-year average.
