The Fenlander News # 1

Town centre overhaul nears completion, penalties for fly-tippers rise and entrepreneurs offered funding

It’s an exciting time in Fenland as completion of the major multi-million pound once-in-a-generation overhaul of March town centre nears completion.

The March town centre regeneration enhances and elevates the town centre environment. In the spirit of promoting a positive environment in Fenland, this month the district council’s cabinet agreed tougher penalties for people who fly-tip or litter

Another project intended to improve the area, is the grant funding available to entrepreneurs creating new businesses, employment and prospects in Fenland.

All this and much more is covered below in this month’s The Fenlander. Don’t miss the various opportunities to feed into current consultations and help shape future plans for services and infrastructure.

An ambitious, multi-million pound scheme to support and revitalise March town centre is nearing completion, with works due to be complete by the end of October.

More than £8.4million has been invested to help the town adapt to the changing retail environment and meet the needs of current and future generations as the town continues to grow.

The once-in-a-generation scheme has included the revamp of March Market Place, riverside enhancement works, improvement grants for businesses and the major transformation of Broad Street to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and create a more open, social, and pedestrian-friendly town centre.

More Saxongate Update

Saxongate help uncover the cause of the recent Snoots Road odour issue.
Saxongate would like to thank members for their accurate and honest reporting of the horrendous odour issues which started last Thursday.

The smell was particularly bad at the A605 (Peterborough Road) end of Snoots Road and was at times even apparent in Stonald Road.

The odour returned again yesterday (7th Oct) and, thankfully, one of the Fenland District Health’s Environmental team, has responded and appears to have identified the issue.

If they are correct the offending works fall under an Environmental Agency (EA) permit. Frustratingly we therefore now have to wait for the EA to respond to the new information before we can say any more on the matter. Assuming our information is correct it does appear the issue will be temporary (to a degree) and that with better thought and planning around weather and wind direction more can be done to protect the amenity and well-being of local residents, as should be the case anyway with permit and planning regulated works.

It is disappointing that the EA have not responded to any of the reports Saxongate have sent them. At least someone at Fenland District Health’s Environmental team took the trouble to come out and respond to local residents’ issues and pleas for help.

The usual  small print, how to raise complaints and a help request:-

Frustrated Drivers Could Be Endangering Lives…..

The below sent by Cllr Dee Laws….

I’ve been receiving reports from concerned drivers using the Ralph Butcher Causeway/A605 Kings Dyke Bridge this morning.

The cones and temporary traffic lights have been moved to the side (probably by frustrated driver/s) and two lane traffic crossing.

I’ve called CCC Highway emergency number – CCC Highways staff on their way, traffic light contractor on their way from Ipswich and the police are aware.

Apparently, CCC highway officer said bridge temporary lights were playing up last night and contactor called to fix. Obviously whatever the problem is wasn’t solved.
Kind regards,

Dee

NQS PPG AGM – Monday 07th October

12 members of The New Queen Street Surgery – Patients Participation Group attended Mondays AGM.

Retiring after 3 years at the helm and one of the founder members of the PPG Alison Bacon deserved an appreciation of her stalwart engagement with both patients, the PPG and Lakeside health.

Nominated and elected was Barry Wainwright who we are sure will keep up the high standards which Alison achieved.

The Practice Manger udated us on the Flu and Covid Vaccination roll out, which has been well received, there are plenty of opportunities still to get vaccinated, the next two Saturdays 08:30 to 14:00 and there will be ‘some’ week day appointments.|
Feedback has been well received and it was noted that there were no delays or queues.

There has been an update on the booking system which is allowing more F2F appointments.

Roy Gerstner gave an update on his attending the Healthwatch Summit last Friday.
It was proposed he should represent the NQS PPG at future Healthwatch meetings.
Two new members attended the meeting including one from Cardea.

Crime & Community Survey

2024 Crime and Community Survey

Today sees the launch of our annual survey looking at your experience of crime and your connection to your local community. The data from the survey goes into a report which we publish on the website, and use to help prioritise our work.

This year we’re working with academic staff at the University of Northumbria who have provided some optional questions at the end of the survey related to health. This is linked to their studies on fear of crime and health outcomes.

The survey takes about ten minutes to complete, and if you can spare the time, we really hope that you will make your views known to us – it really is appreciated!
