Dear Partners,
I write in the absence of Area Commander Dave Murphy, following yesterday’s terrorist attack in London and associated enquiries being made in the Weds Midlands area.
Firstly, I am sure we are all saddened and reflective at this time for those who lost their lives and those who are left behind. There are close links between London and Cambridgeshire in many different ways and a number of our residents will be travelling to the capital this morning for business and other reasons as per their usual routines.
Whilst I appreciate that you will receive many pieces of information from different sources and may be involved in County or wider discussions with Police and others concerning this event, I wanted to offer a brief update from the Fenland senior Management Team as those responsible for the day-to-day policing of the area.
As I am sure you may be aware, the current threat level in the United Kingdom remains “Severe” and this has been unchanged following yesterday’s events. There remains a necessity for sustained vigilance in our communities. However, we seek to perpetuate the national message of maintaining normality as far as able and encouraging communities to report anything they feel is relevant. 101 should be used for calls that are non-urgent and of course 999 for more serious matters where concerns are imminent or severe.
Yesterday we commenced contacting representatives of a wide range of local communities and will continue to do so to deliver a strategy of providing consistent messaging and ensuring exchange of information. This will include engagement with our partners at supervisory and operational level.
Owing to the demographic of Fenland, it is very much a case of business as usual. As you can imagine, key locations and those with a high footfall across the County will see an increase in Police presence. This is not to alarm but merely to increase immediate accessibility of officers to offer words of reassurance and information to those who need it.
The Constabulary is currently running a command structure operating along the lines of Gold (Strategic), Silver (Tactical) and Bronze (Operations) with which you may be familiar. This will meet periodically to ensure that a Force-wide strategy is delivered and the effective governance of activity across the six local authority areas of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough UA.
Should there be any additional information that comes to light, we will of course ensure that it is shared in a timely fashion.
